There is a glut of lawyers in the market.

My sister in law has an interview with a large PoS law firm today actually and she is out with her LEC 2 years now. A significant portion of her graduation class are all employed in non legal related work as well.

X2, on glut of lawyers. Know a few attorney offices that consolidated.

In terms of accountants, yes there is still demand but not as much as before. Lots of job applications requires ACCA Level 2 and above.

By chance what area of operation were they in?

RBC offers VSEP to service delivery staff

RBC is preparing to downsize even further as they have offered voluntary separation programme (VSEP) packages to eligible employees of their service delivery teams. This was confirmed via email late Wednesday evening by director of sales effectiveness, strategic and corporate communications of Caribbean Banking, Jacqueline Taggart out of Toronto, Canada. It has not yet been confirmed how many employees will be affected.

Taggart said because of the way that banking has evolved the bank has to think differently about managing their clients needs.

"This means that transaction volumes that once required the work of many and took days or weeks to complete, can today with the advantages of digitally supported self-service and other technical innovations be finished with fewer resources in a matter of hours. This is why we have offered eligible employees the voluntary separation programme. As always, we are working with employees to ensure they have the right information to make informed decisions about their future."

Given the stated contract number can any one infer or inform us as to how many might be affected by this termination?

Who wants a job?

Robinson-Regis: 13,000 vacancies at government ministries
Julien Neaves

LEADER of Government Business Camille Robinson-Regis has reported more than 13,000 vacancies at government ministries. She was responding to a question in the House Wednesday on behalf of the Minister of Public Administration.

She said based on the information from 22 ministries there are 6,505 vacancies in the permanent establishment as at March 2019, and the number of vacant contract positions as at March 2019 was 6,517.

Caroni East MP Dr Tim Goopesingh asked if there were any attempts by the Public Administration Ministry to fill these vacancies, and if so, when. Robinson-Regis said the ministry is always working with the Director of Personnel Administration to fill vacancies and this is an ongoing process.

Earlier in an urgent question, Robinson-Regis responded to a query about reports that workers of the Reforestation Programme had not been issued salaries for the past three months. She said the ministry had requested funding to pay the workers from the Finance Ministry and the ministry was working on approval. She added all pay sheets had been processed.

Naparima MP Rodney Charles asked the reason for the delay and Robinson-Regis replied that it was due to documentary approval which was sent to the Finance Ministry as a result of the existence of “so-called ghost workers.” She said these ghost workers have troubled the programme for an inordinate length of time and an audit was necessary to ensure contractors had hired the people they said they hired.

OWTU: 199 UTT employees to lose jobs

OWTU president general Ancel Roget has said 199 University of TT (UTT) employees will be retrenched next week. He was addressing an emergency media conference at the entrance of UTT’s San Fernando campus yesterday. Comparing the retrenchment to what occurred at state-owned oil company Petrotrin last November, he said this seems to be the chief economic strategy of the ruling PNM.“Some 199 workers are listed to be sent home next week at UTT. They are going to send them home, if they are allowed to, and with the support of the government, certainly with the support of the ministers of finance and education. And that is the government’s economic model for running this country: send workers home.”He said the union had been told about the retrenchment plan at a recent meeting with UTT officials and that this number represented only some of the planned retrenchments at the university.“This is the first wave of major retrenchment in UTT and the people who are going to be impacted, going to be sent home, are not the top management, not the corporate staff, but people who are within the bargaining unit represented by the union.”He said these were non-academic staff such as administrative, IT, technical staff, engineering and maintenance workers.“When that occurs next week, if it is allowed to occur, what this means that in this holiday period, these workers would not be able to provide for their children to go to school."He said the government "can find money to retrench workers but they cannot find money to pay workers or to keep workers active.”

He said the union had a similar experience before the government left the oil and gas sector.“The process of consultation, like the process of consultation in the other entity with respect to sending workers home – I am referring to Petrotrin – they have abandoned that with a willingness and intent to send home workers, and they are picking and choosing the people they are sending home.”He said the union had identified a number of vacancies which could be filled with qualified workers, saying this would reduce the number who would be retrenched.“During the discussions we would have identified a number of vacancies at UTT, but their plan is to cut staff across the board while continuing to pay consultants huge sums of money.”He said one consultant was paid $3,000 an hour.Roget declined to say what action the union would take to prevent the mass retrenchment, except that it was calling on government to intervene in the situation.“This government has the unenviable distinction of sending home the most amount of workers in the shortest possible time and that is their legacy."There is an answer to all of this, but this morning is not the time for that answer. Ours is the call to the government to let good sense prevail, direct the university’s management, get your Minister of Education back in the discussions so that we can get some humanity and sense to what they call restructuring, which is really about sending workers home.”

Sixty-eight employees of the Chaguaramas Development Authority (CDA) will be sent home in the coming weeks as the authority seeks to reduce its expenditure and tackle its $88 million debt.

how in gods name the people protest on monday for salary increase and on tuesday the going to fire 68 people, this looking like a case of victimization. they couldnt be happy they had a job i this economy and go with the flow but they choose to make noise and look at them now. this just sad.
