Lets talk portable generators!

Postby jackal » June 27th, 2017, 2:10 pm

During the storm last week, the reality of having a generator manifested itself.

So lets hear from the experts.

Type, wattages, sizing, ATS, MTS, who have, best prices and brands?

Problems with ones you had/have and related items to portable generators.

Looking to buy one!

a real 2000 will run a large fridge and some lights
2000 are typically small and portable 40-50lbs
The inverter ones are quiet too

How long did you lose power?

Decide what you want to power and add 20% for losses and in-rush currents. Unless you are adding a larger unit, a transfer switch and an emergency panel, shop by price.

10kw is enough to handle a small house (about 70A). In my experience, natural gas and LPG will give you longer life than gasoline, fewer emissions than gas or diesel and be much more quiet than diesel.

I won't get into what it takes to wire the generator to your house but I would recommend you get someone with at least a Wireman's license to advise and install if you're not sure what is in the current NEC.

Expect to pay $25k to $35k for the generator and another $3k to $10k for the installation.

I have the 6250 Coleman Subaru from pricesmart
Bought it second hand right here
Works very good and quiet , can also weld with it adequately
Needs two persons to lift if going in vehicle

The cheap Chinese ones make a lot of noise

Sorry. I see that you wanted portable. At 10 kW you're at about 200 to 250 pounds of generator. It's going to be big and noisy. Great for powering up a construction site, though. It's going to be a lot less expensive, too. I'm guessing around $10,000.

That is what I was looking at.

The only drawback is the weight of the unit, may consider going smaller due to the weight issue. Electric start is a must.

I was looking at what Price smart has online, and based on the options, they are quite reasonable compared to the retail outlets.

the champion ones are good
I bought a champion 2000 on ebay
didnt work, the service dept hotline sent me parts 3 different times to try.
in the end it was actually something on the throttle which had shifted during shipping.

If you're going to use 10 kW, you may as well stop thinking about it as portable. Bolt it down somewhere and run a cable to your transfer switch. If you don't use an auxiliary panel and move circuits around, just be certain to watch your loads. You won't be able to run a stick welder with the AC on high and the doors of the freezer open but otherwise you should be okay.

And don't skimp on that wiring installation if you have any intention of preventing someone of dying from electrocution.

Buy a big diesel operated one, those with smaller carbs are troublesome especially if left for a extended period.

i remember checking out one in a nursing home, i think the person wanted 8K? im sure that unit made 10 times that in its lifetime as a standby

Also consider the ones using dual fuel . if you have the unit running on propane you can keep it inside youy garage etc

Today I went to FT Farfan to check out some, they should be getting in some Generac electric start next week.

One of the advantage of buying local is the warranty and parts availability, FT honors their warranty.

Anyone bought a generator recently?

Looking to get one that I can weld from.

I am wondering if it will be cheaper to buy one locally or on Amazon.

Check the welder input rating that you want to use for the size of the generator that is required.

You may also want to consider the cost of a welder generator instead.

Good luck.

Depends what level of welding you are doing.

I weld with the pricesmart Subaru 6250, bought it second hand right here on tuner actually.
Powers my inverter stick for 12ga rods.

It is pull start, anything bigger will be much heavier and electric start.

You don't want generators to break down quick, diesel is your only choice because of this. But if you must go gas then you need this

https://www.amazon.com/Honda-EU3000iS-S ... rator&th=1

Buy Honda only, best most reliable small engine brand in the world.

For welding though your best bet by far is Diesel Generator.

I have three gasoline generators that I bought at Pricesmart with the 6 HP OHV Briggs and Stratton engine. I haven't had any problems in nearly 10 years. Except for the one that was usually shut down incorrectly.

If you empty the carburetor bowl by turning off the fuel petcock and let the engine run until it shuts itself off, you will eliminate most of the problems with this type of carburetor.

I rebuilt a lot of carbs as a teenager on mowers, trimmers and chainsaws that people threw away. The carburetor rebuild was usually all that kept them from running.

You can also convert most carbureted generators to LPG.

Since he wants it for welding the Diesel would be a lot better due to fuel consumption since diesel is an oil. There is the added benefit that diesel engines never need ignition tuneup since they don't work with spark plugs or distributors. So much less problems to worry about in the long run this is why you never see diesel forklifts shutting down but you always see the gas ones shutting down and having to start back.

Plus the torque in diesel is so much better for any heavy load without wearing out the engine lifespan like gas engines.

Yeah you would want to have that diesel generator out in the open but if its maintained it shouldn't smell.
