The police didn't really do anything, the family got a call for ransom, they paid $30,000 for proof of life and then the balance of $240,000 to have the kidnap victim released, the police then posted on social media that they successfully got the victim back from the kidnappers, if the family had not acted quickly the police would not have been able to get the victim to safety, unfortunate is that now kidnappers will feel confident that they can get their ransom.

While I'm cautiously optimistic, let's see if they get charged.

Well is y'all saying police eh doing anything and the goalposts just keep getting moved.

I'm just pointing out that if no arrests were made people would be saying oh no arrests made police not doing anything.

Hopefully charges will be made but to say police not doing anything is a bit much.

Great job by the TTPS on acting so quickly!

A village snackette owner told me that he fears he may be next...i had to assure him that the TTPS treats all kidnap cases with equality.

Laventille man charged in Laing kidnapping

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/20170708 ... kidnapping

AFTER one week in custody, a 29-year-old man has been charged in relation to the kidnapping of San Fernando businessman Gregory Laing.

The suspect, said to be from Laventille, was charged yesterday morning after investigators sought instructions from Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard, SC.

He is expected to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate tomorrow morning, charged under section four of the Kidnapping Act (11:26).

Under this section, the suspect could face a term of imprisonment of no less than 15 years if found guilty.

The section states, “A person who receives, has possession of or disposes of any money or property or any proceeds thereof, which has previously been delivered as ransom in connection with an offence punishable under section 3, knowing or having reason to believe that the money or other property had, at any time, been delivered as such ransom, commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment not less than 15 years.”

The suspect is being represented by attorneys Criston J Williams and Chelsea John.

Another man, identified as an Imam, was released following instructions received from the DPP.

Seven suspects were initially detained on July 1, two days after Laing’s kidnapping.

Marked bills

Three of these people, including a 17-year-old girl, were detained at Alicia’s Palace in Maraval, while the others were detained at their homes in Laventille and Beetham Gardens.

The 17-year-old was released last Thursday night. Laing was kidnapped at about 3 a.m. on June 29 as he was opening his Puff n’ Stuff Bakery at Circular Road, Vistabella.

Shortly afterwards, relatives received a phone call from someone demanding a ransom of $270,000 for his safe return. The call was traced to the Beetham Gardens community and searches were conducted for the missing man. Even as the search was being conducted, arrangements were made by relatives, under the supervision of the police, to deliver the ransom monies in two payments—$30,000 delivered in a track in Beetham Gardens and later $240,000 near the TATECO Credit Union in Barataria. Shortly afterwards, Laing was released unharmed.

However, officers had recorded the serial numbers of the money seized and following several leads they conducted exercises which led to the seizure of some of the money and the arrests of suspects.

Police said other people who are in custody may be charged later this week as officers are expected to return to the DPP for instructions.
