Port Authority: Oily Water Not From Galleons Passage

The Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago says oily water and silt sedimentation seen in the waters off the Waterfront near Hyatt is not from the Galleons Passage or any of its vessels.

A photo circulating on social media suggests that the Galleons Passage is leaking oil.

In a media release, the Port Authority advised there are 5 storm drains between the Cruise Ship Complex and the Caricom Jetty, designed for the outflow of water from the city of Port of Spain to assist with the prevention of flooding.

The Port Authority said over the years it has had to deal with the situation of oily water and other debris on the Waterfront which flowed through these storm drains.

The Port said the situation is heightened during periods of heavy rainfall and over the last few days there has been an increase in oil on the sea front.

And it advised that the vessels: the T&T Spirit, the M.V Cabo Star and the Galleons Passage have not contributed in any way to this existing situation.

After the 'Doña Mercedes' of the Venezuelan shipping company Grand Cacique II was transferred to Trinidad Tobago flag and renoamed 'Galleons Passage' in January 2018 due to financial difficulties, it has to be taken China for repairs of the damaged propellers and transmission shafts.

The only question to answer after all the above is : Did the company (GranCacique) in Venezuela really take control of the vessel in December 2016 and start to use it to transport passengers?

Was the vessel damaged in sea trials in China BEFORE the company could have taken control of it? Or did the damage happen AFTER we bought it?

Did the vessel ever reach Venezuela or was it stuck in China because of GranCacique's 'financial' difficulties?

Did GranCacique REFUSE to take the vessel AFTER it was damaged in sea trials?

Is that why we were able to buy it for US$17 million?
