The so-called “fake oil” scandal is a good example of why so many people have become disillusioned with politicians.
Here is a matter of serious public interest in which the State oil company, Petrotrin, has allegedly been defrauded over a period of eight years of roughly $100 million in oil by a private producer.
This is no matter for political finger-pointing and bacchanal; it is a matter for the police. The question of who was friend with whom and who has it in for whom are all irrelevant. The only important question is whether the evidence exists to support the allegation of the August 17 audit report that A&V Oil and Gas had inflated its oil production figures and defrauded Petrotrin of almost $100 million.
If the evidence exists, the Petrotrin board and management have one immediate priority, which is to call in the Fraud Squad. After that, it needs to conduct a full scale internal investigation into the integrity of its transactions with other producers and to comprehensively review its operation to determine how such a scam was facilitated.
In responding to the “fake oil” allegation, the Prime Minister’s sole interest should have been the national interest. Instead, he has seized upon it as yet another opportunity to complain about his persecution by his former leader, Patrick Manning, and the former prime minister now Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Dr Rowley needs to understand that this issue is not about him; it is about the country. Instead of obsessing over past hurts, he should recognise that the leadership reins are in his hands and the responsibility for pointing the direction in which the country must go, belongs to him.
Whatever chips that he is carrying on his shoulder over perceived injustices committed against him by Mr Manning and Mrs Persad-Bissessar, he must rest those aside. This is a dicey moment for both Trinidad and Tobago and Petrotrin. Both are in dire economic straits. Dr Rowley’s Government is on the verge of implementing a major restructuring plan at Petrotrin with all the attendant risks of business and labour upheaval. This audit report could turn the entire restructuring exercise into combustible material with terrible consequences for Petrotrin and the economy.
For her part, the Opposition Leader has done the public a service in revealing the existence of the audit report. While we are in no way suggesting any wrong-doing on the part of the Petrotrin board or management, the people of T&T have had enough experience of cover-ups to welcome her alerting them to the audit report. Having done so, however, Mrs Persad-Bissessar should allow the investigation to take its course while keeping a hawk’s eye on Petrotrin. In attempting to exploit the situation to maximum political advantage, she is drawing equal attention to the failure of her own administration, given that the “fake oil” scam is alleged to have continued under her watch, having begun under the Manning administration.
As for Dr Rowley, he needs to rethink his flippant response. Whatever importance he assigns to the past, it is the present by which he will be judged.
