Well, well, well, it seems that "Arrive Alive" is dictating policy to the government and the Ministry of Works as to the implementation of the new speed limits, that have been agreed to by both the government and the opposition a few weeks ago.
One of the reasons that it has not yet been implemented, according to a news release by the A.G., about a week and a half ago, and which was published in the newspapers, is that the new highway limit of 100 km/h will not be applied until April 2018, is because "Arrive Alive" wants more speed traps to be put in place and other items "fixed" before "they" will allow it.
The A.G also stated that information garnered from the engineering consultants who did a study and report on the condition of the main highways as relates to "speed capability", is that they indicated that the highways could accommodate speeds of 120 km/h, safely ..... Well, well, well...

In a newspaper post, following another night accident, where there was a casualty on a "major road" and not the Highway, the president of Arrive Alive, called on the police to use their new toys between 6AM and 6PM. - a time period when there are NO fatal accidents. Everyone knows that 95 % and more of the fatal accidents happen between 9.00pm and 5.00am on weekends.

Well if their argument was that "Speed guns saves lives" and that is what they used to force the government to capitulate to them on, should they not use it instead in the night ?

That BS argument that the government caved to, that the drop in road deaths was a result of the implementation of the speed guns was the biggest LIE ever put upon our citizens. The drop in deaths was as a result of improved crash barriers in areas that were prone to "cross over" accidents and breathalyzer tests at night, that cut down on drunk driving.

And as a last point, an informed source pointed out that approximately 95 % of the "speeding tickets" issued were UNDER 100 km/h....... which is the new limit to be implemented.
So guess what the "speed-gun police" new line will be at their weekly press briefing next year when the limit is raised ..... " We have seen a decrease in speeding violations due to the implementation of the new policies". HA !!! Yeah right ....

But... Don't get me wrong here, I am all for saving lives ... BRING ON THE RED LIGHT CAMERAS .... NOW !!!

I challenge anyone to prove otherwise.

it was assented to yesterday but i think it still has to be proclaimed

http://newsday.co.tt/2017/12/13/100-km-h-speed-limit-to-soon-become-law/

100 km/h speed limit to soon become law
The speed limit on the nation’s highways could soon increase, after the assent of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Amendment)(No.2) Bill, 2017. Checks with the Parliament’s website showed President Anthony Carmona assented to the bill yesterday. The provisions of the bill will come into effect, once it is proclaimed as law.

The bill permits the enforcement of new maximum speed limits on certain motor vehicles, inside and outside of built up areas. Port-of-Spain, San Fernando and Arima are among the places defined as built-up areas. Clause one of the bill will amend Section 62(7) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, to allow the President to amend the schedule on speed limits.

The new schedule on speed limits indicates the maximum speed limit for private vehicles outside of built up areas will increase from 80 to 100 km/h. Inside built-up areas, that speed limit is 50 km/h. The maximum speed limit of tractors outside built up areas is 35 km/h. Inside built-up areas, the limit is 20 km/h.

The maximum speed limits for other vehicles outside built up areas is 65 km/h, while their speed limit inside built-up areas is 50 km/h.

These include vehicles built to carry more than ten passengers and goods vehicles with trailers that do not exceed 3,200 kg in weight. Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi brought the bill to Parliament on October 9.

The bill was passed in the House of Representatives and the Senate on November 17 and 28, respectively.

THE Ministry of Works and Transport has begun replacing the speed limit signs to reflect the new 100 kilometre per hour limit soon to be enforced. This according to Highways Division Director Navin Ramsingh.

Ministry employees were seen changing the signs, which Ramsingh said will be covered until the new regulation is proclaimed law by President Anthony Carmona. Only then will the signs be unveiled.

“What will happen is the signs will change but will remain covered until further notice. Everyone knows that the speed limit on the highway is 80 km/h,” he said.

The amended Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act bill was debated and passed in the Senate on November 28.

This new bill will permit the new speed limit to increase from 80 km/h to 100km/h.

The bill was first brought to Parliament by Attorney General Faris Al Rawi in October.

The speed limit on all major highways throughout T&T has been increased to 100 kilometres per hour and will take effect today.

However, this only means motorists will face the full brunt of the law if they exceed this new limit, as police officers will not be exercising any level of leniency.

The way for the new speed limit was cleared after President Anthony Carmona assented to the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic (Amendment) (No 2) Act of 2017. Yesterday, Ministry of Works and Transport workers began replacing the speed limit signs to reflect the new 100 kilometre per hour limit soon to be enforced.

In a release yesterday, the ministry said it was working with the office of the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs for the publication of the requisite legal notices “to allow for the regulation and enforcement of the new speed limits in Trinidad and Tobago.”

The amended Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act bill was debated and passed in the Senate on November 28. The new bill will permit the new speed limit to increase from 80 km per hour to 100km per hour.

Contacted on the move yesterday, Arrive Alive (AA) president Sharon Inglefield said they had no issue with raising the speed limit but noted it must be “subject to proper road safety maintenance and infrastructure to include a minimum of a three-star status international rating for roads ... meaning,…excellent road markings with thermoplastic paint, signage, lighting, road surfaces, pot hole repairs, barriers, pedestrian crossings and an Irapp audit that will ensure that present road network is safe at higher speeds and that the most vulnerable are protected.”

However, she noted that there needs to be discussed the lack of proper signage “going into villages, towns and around schools at 30 kph! Nobody seems to remember that we all need to slow down to protect pedestrians in these areas!”

Inglefield urged the TTPS to continue to include the enforcement with the new speed guns and breathalyser tests.

Yesterday, driver Khalil Khan said whilst he welcomed the increase he hopes the authorities will focus on reckless drivers. Another driver, Sasier Gokool, said she had no objection providing checks are done to ensure the increased speed limit adheres to proper design standards to maintain safe commute of the public. Shivanee Ramadhar, of Chaguanas, said the increased speed limit should play a role in easing the traffic congestion.

First in a long time Sharon Inglefield made sense.
Fed up seeing (among a long list of things) drivers avoid potholes by swinging into oncoming traffic.
