So first big casualty......Italy doesn't make it to the world cup 2018..!!!!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/201 ... up-finals/

14 NOVEMBER 2017 • 2:27PM
Italy was in a state of shock, dismay and bitter recrimination on Tuesday after the national football team failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958.

Italy were eliminated from next year’s tournament in Russia after a scoreless draw against Sweden in Milan on Monday night produced a 1-0 aggregate loss in a two-leg play-off.

Pulling no punches, newspapers likened the humiliation to Caporetto, a disastrous battle in the First World War in which Italian forces were routed by the Austro-Hungarian army.

Pots:

How many teams are in the World Cup and how does the group stage work?

There are 32 teams in the World Cup broken into eight groups of four teams. UEFA, Europe's soccer governing body, will have 14 participants, which is the most out of any other continent and nearly half of the field. CONMEBOL (South America), CAF (Africa) and AFC (Asia) each have five participants, while CONCACAF (Central and North America) will have three participants

How does the draw work?

All of the participants are split into four different pots based on the FIFA World Rankings, with Pot 1 being the strongest teams and Pot 4 being the weakest of the crop. The host nation, Russia, will automatically be placed in Pot 1 and in Group A.

How is this different from other World Cup draws?

The pots used to be determined based by "geographic and sports criteria." For example, in the previous World Cup (Brazil 2014), FIFA placed the seven highest ranked teams in Pot 1 and that was it. The other pots were split based on geographic regions (Pot 2 was for Africa and South America, Pot 3 for Asia and North America, Pot 4 for Europe). This time around they're split up based on the rankings.

Pot One: Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland, France, Russia

Pot Two: Spain, Peru, Switzerland, England, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, Croatia

Pot Three: Denmark, Iceland, Costa Rica, Sweden, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal, Iran

Pot Four: Serbia, Nigeria, Australia, Japan, Morocco, Panama, South Korea, Saudi Arabia

These countries will then be divided into eight groups of four from A to H with each side playing three times before the top two advance to the second round. Russia will be dropped into Group A as hosts

The gap between the old guard and the new power players is shrinking daily.
Italy didn't make it? Big deal they've been boring as all heck for sometime now!

^Well that changes things. There doesn't appear to be a "Group of Death" per se, but the hardest group would be:

Group D
Argentina
Iceland
Croatia
Nigeria

After that it's:
Group F
Germany
Mexico
Sweden
South Korea

The top two teams from all the other groups should qualify easily...but stranger things have happened...:|

:? :?
2nd Place in 2010 WC
3rd Place in 2014 WC (and that by beating the World's most overrated national Team Brazil in that 3rd place match)

I'd say they are a powerhouse going through a lean patch.

^Moreso Argentina than Brazil it seems. The latter came away 1-0 winners against Germany yesterday without Neymar.

Then again these are just friendlies, WC is a whole different ball game.
