Maradona calls for meeting with Argentina players

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/spo ... 724111.cms

Diego Maradona has requested a meeting with Argentina's players in an attempt to inspire the struggling squad ahead of their crucial final World Cup group game against Nigeria.

The two-time world champions must beat Nigeria in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday if they are to avoid a premature exit following a disastrous 3-0 defeat by Croatia.

He said he would bring along other Argentina greats of the past for the motivational talk.

"I would love to hold a meeting with them, with (Nery) Pumpido, with (Sergio) Goycochea, with (Claudio) Caniggia, with (Pedro) Troglio, even with (Daniel) Passarella if he wants to come, and with (Jorge) Valdano," Maradona told Venezuelan TV channel Telesur.

"We're going to defend our honour, boys. It cost us too much to be where we are for Croatia to come and hit us for three goals and to leave with our arms crossed without anyone putting a foot in."

Maradona, who has criticised coach Jorge Sampaoli and striker Sergio Aguero in recent days, also took aim at Argentina Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia in his latest outburst.

"I'm furious and very upset inside, because anyone who wore that (Argentina) shirt can't see it being trampled like that by a Croatian team that isn't Germany, that isn't Brazil, that isn't Holland or Spain," he said.

"But there is a guilty party and the culprit is the president of the AFA. Everyone just accepted it when Sampaoli came in with computers, with drones, with 14 assistants.

"I think there is a total lack of authority on Tapia's part."

Javier Mascherano, one of the squad's senior players, denied on Sunday that there was a rift between Sampaoli and the players

FIFA Russia 2018: That Old Peruvian World Cup Magic

http://90soccer.com/wordpress/specials/ ... cup-magic/

- Peruvian World Cup Fever Prevails

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is under way and World Cup fever is a real thing at the moment. In many ways, however, the World Cup isn’t what it was, and it no longer occupies the role of being the main reference for top quality football. This is mainly because it seems to have lost its prominence and esteem with European football clubs. In fact, European club football hands over its players into the welcoming arms of the World Cup in a state of exhaustion after running the players into the red during the tiring club season.

However, the magic of the World Cup is about more than just its position of esteem in Europe or club season. It’s about people coming together from all over the world to celebrate a shared passion for football. This is what provides pure magic, and this time round, much of that magic is coming from Peru.

- 36 Years In The Waiting

Peru last qualified for the World Cup in 1982 – that’s a whopping 36 years ago. That particular year the white and red was sported in Spain, and yes, it was a truly epic World Cup. But it must also be said that at the time, the Peruvian attendees were either the elite and the wealthy, or those living in Europe in any event. Ordinary Peruvian citizens simply did not have the means to travel the world, let alone attend an event the size of the World Cup.

Make no mistake, even today, it is no cheap affair to travel from Lima to Russia. The most affordable travel package available to someone living in Peru was going at a rate of around $6,000, roughly 10 times the average person working in Peru’s monthly salary.

Despite the heavy price tag, FIFA has reported that more than 43,000 tickets had been sold to people travelling from Peru. Of all 31 countries visiting Russia this year, only 6 nations bought more tickets than Peru.

Now that’s saying something about Peruvian passion.

- A Game For Ordinary People

Interestingly enough, no sober Peruvian travelled to Russia hoping to come back with the trophy. For Peruvians, it’s simply an opportunity to support what they love, and in many ways too, to claim their spot on the map and to show the world that they exist. Regardless of whether they back their team in Russia or put money down on them while NZ sports betting, they want to show they are proud of their men and are behind them all the way- however far that may be.

There is much in the way of the spirit of the World Cup to be found in the attendance of the Peruvian people. In essence, it strips the international event of its elitist cloak of previous years and its proof that the World Cup has the power to bring the nations together in a very special and unpretentious way

FIFA World Cup 2018: FIFA opens proceedings against hot-headed German team officials

https://indianexpress.com/article/fifa/ ... s-5231810/

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against two German team officials who stormed towards the Sweden bench gesticulating and clapping after the defending World Cup champions’ last-gasp Group F victory on Saturday.

Team media officer Ulrich Voigt and a German FA (DFB) employee in charge of the DFB office for the national team, Georg Behlau, charged towards the Sweden bench pumping their fists when Toni Kroos’ stoppage-time goal gave Germany a 2-1 victory.

The Swedish coaching staff and reserve players stood up and immediately confronted them and shoved them back towards their technical area. The incident almost escalated into a wider physical altercation after Swedish officials pushed Behlau away.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened disciplinary proceedings against the German officials Ulrich Voigt and Georg Behlau for incidents at the end of the match Germany vs. Sweden,” FIFA said in a statement. The incident was caught on camera and quickly went viral while also promoting angry reactions from the Swedish coach and players. Sweden’s Emil Forsberg labelled the Germans’ behaviour “disgusting.” Germany’s coach Joachim Loew said he was not aware of the incident.

The DFB refused to comment on the matter when repeatedly contacted by Reuters on Sunday. It issued an apology to the Swedes on Twitter late on Saturday, but it has not said whether it will take any action against its own employees. The DFB, bidding to host Euro 2024, also did not say whether it had stripped the pair of their accreditation or if they will be part of their pitchside team at their final Group F game, against South Korea on June 27. Germany, World Cup winners in 2014, lost their group opener against Mexico. Their late victory over the Swedes threw them a lifeline for a spot in the next round.

South America disappoints but is the demise permanent?

https://www.deccanherald.com/2018-fifa- ... 76780.html

Three South American sides have accounted for almost half of all World Cup titles but their worst overall performance since 2002 has raised the question: Is South American football on the wane

With the group stage more than half-way complete, South American teams have already lost four matches, more than during the entire opening stage in the last three World Cups

Of the five South American teams present in Russia, only Brazil and Uruguay have not been beaten.

Peru are already on their way home after losing their first two games, while Argentina and Colombia are sweating over their qualification chances.

South America is home to some of football's most iconic stadiums, the most passionate fans, and three players who have legitimate claims to be the greatest in history - Pele, Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.

But the below-par show in Russia seems to suggest that Europe - where all the best players now ply their trade – has overtaken the Latins. Or is this a temporary blip?

"I don't know if it's fair to say the South American teams have played badly but now football is very equal you don't have the differences and gaps that existed before," said Mexican defender Miguel Layun, whose team's rousing performances have been compared with the best of the southern hemisphere

"Today anyone can compete with anyone. We can see that each year the concept of favourites is diminishing, the other teams have a lot of merit for their tactics and how well they played against them."

With European leagues importing players from all over the world, nations with no footballing pedigree have a presence at the highest level.

Those players have shared their knowledge back home and closed the gap on the old powers, as results in Russia show.

Portugal struggled to beat Morocco 1-0, Iran impressed during a 1-0 defeat by Spain, Uruguay needed a last-gasp goal to beat Egypt and Senegal were worthy winners over Poland.

The South American sides have suffered, particularly Peru, whose two defeats in two games is perhaps indicative of their 36-year absence from World Cup finals.

Argentina, beaten finalists four years ago, were crushed 3-0 by Croatia and held 1-1 by Iceland. Colombia were beaten 2-1 by Japan.

The defeats could be a commentary on South America's chaotic domestic leagues. But they could also say more about the developing world's rise than South America's demise.

"At this World Cup it has been clear that with a lot of passion and commitment teams can achieve a lot and the so-called smaller teams are making life very difficult for the so-called bigger teams," Germany's Marco Reus said.

"That is the characteristic of this World Cup, it is full of surprises."

1. MISSED PENALTY! SAUDI ARABIA 0 EGYPT 1:

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/foo ... 14236.html

The old man has done it! A brilliant save from Essam Elhadary denies Al Muwallad Al-Harbi from the penalty spot! The 45-year-old flung himself to his right to tip the striker's spotkick on to the post and away to safety. It's justice done after the decision to award the penalty appeared harsh, Ahmed Fathi adjudged to have handled Yasser Al-Shahrani's cross despite having his back to the play. There might not be anything riding on this game, but that save is one of the great World Cup moments!

2. RED CARD! URUGUAY 2 RUSSIA 0:

Russia's job has just got much, much harder. Booked just eight minutes earlier for a foul on Vecino, Igor Smolnikov has just launched himself into a sliding challenge to stop Laxalt. The midfielder, however, had too much speed for the right-back, and once contact brought down the Uruguayan in full flight, referee Malang Diedhiou had no other option than to show a second yellow card and then a red.
