No more Net Neutrality in the US?

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » November 22nd, 2017, 11:25 am

F.C.C. Plans Net Neutrality Repeal in a Victory for Telecoms

The Federal Communications Commission released a plan on Tuesday to dismantle landmark regulations that ensure equal access to the internet, clearing the way for internet service companies to charge users more to see certain content and to curb access to some websites.

Under the new plan, broadband providers will be able to block access, slow down or speed up service for its business partners in some cases — as long as they notify customers.

Big online companies like Google and Facebook say the repeal proposal would allow telecom companies to play favorites by charging customers for accessing some sites or by slowing speeds to others. The existing rules were written to prevent such arrangements, adopting a policy often called net neutrality.

Small online companies believe the proposal would hurt innovation, because telecom companies could force them to pay more for the faster connections. Only the largest companies, they say, would be able to afford the expense of making sure their sites received preferred treatment. Companies like Etsy and Pinterest, for example, credit their start to the promise of free and open access on the internet.

They could block out access to torrents, streams on Kodi etc or seriously slow them down.

Well RIP US innovation, this one step will take them years behind the rest of the world.

There is some hope
To Save Net Neutrality, We Must Build Our Own Internet
We must end our reliance on big telecom monopolies and build decentralized, affordable, locally owned internet infrastructure.

https://jamaicatelscene.wordpress.com/2 ... take-note/

Kingston, Jamaica – Thursday 23rd November 2017. The move by the FCC in the US to roll back restrictive net neutrality regulation as it relates to regulating the Internet is a “victory for telecoms, consumers and economies” Digicel said today as it urged Caribbean regulators to take note and not simply apply a blanket one size fits all approach in their markets.
Digicel supports an open internet but the strict approach to net neutrality previously adopted in the US favoured the interests of the large Internet companies like Google and Facebook (who notably invest no money in infrastructure) while stifling innovation and seriously hampering the telecoms companies who provide and pay for the Internet networks.

^"(who notably invest no money in infrastructure)"

But doesn't the government subsidize the cable providers (with taxpayers money) to provide infrastructure? It is well known that the US government gave a lot of money to the major players to provide fiber infrastructure to the entire of America internet access, but as yet, huge parts of USA doesn't have fiber or accessible internet.

Does Digicel and TSTT gets a similar deal here and across the Caribbean? Are the subscribers getting free internet based on taxes, or don't we actually pay them a fee to support the infrastructure? Why bring up that argument in net neutrality?

The world wide web was created for the free flow of information. Software companies should not have to pay an extra fee to support the bandwidth of its popularity. So without net neutrality, the owners of Trinituner will have to pay telecom companies a fee to allow a larger bandwidth because the site is so popular compared to some other websites that no one visits. To offset that additional fee now, this would mean more ads, having to set up subscription for access to user content, less user content contributed, less entertainment, less freedom of speech online, and inevitable loss of users due to these new distasteful policies.

That is what we want?
