A gunman walked through the gates of a primary school in Princes Town, held up a teacher and drove off in her vehicle on Wednesday morning.

Police said the man entered the compound at around 7.30a.m. as parents were dropping off children at the Jordan Hill Presbyterian School.

The school is located along the busy Manahambre Road which links Princes Town to San Fernando.

The female teacher entered through a gates designated for members of staff only.

Police said as the teacher exited his Nissan Frontier van the man pointed a gun at her. She was ordered to hand over the keys to the vehicle.

The teacher handed over the keys and the gunman drove off.

A report was made at the Princes Town police station.

The incident has outraged parents who are now calling on the Ministry of Education to provide more security at the school.

There is one security guard stationed at the school.

The Express was told that classes were dismissed and parents were contacted to pick up their children.

Parent Salina Ramdhan said she was now fearful for her children's safety, “I am not sure I will send them to school tomorrow. This is just crazy for a gunman to walk into a school like this. We have been asking for more security guards here,” she said.

Another parent, Karen Revero, said her children were traumatised by the news. Revero said parents were demanding increased security as the lone female guard was overwhelmed, especially on mornings.

Ministry of Education officials said they were awaiting details of the incident.

When you think about it, all primary schools are vulnerable to such incidents. What the one guard present (if at all) really gonna do :?:

Even if there were five guards, A armed individual would've still been able to do this. Realistically.

We does hire vagrant and thing as security in this country years ago I worked with a typical private security firm and some of my co workers were vagrants. These security firms have ZERO standards in hiring, they hire Obese people 500 pounds and thing in this place. But somehow I am to believe that a security officer would risk his life for minimum wage?

We need to band guns to prevent school shootings before they start happening here
