A Rio Claro primary school teacher has been denied bail after she appeared before a Port of Spain magistrate yesterday, charged with attempting to obtain more than $25 million by false pretence.

Mavis Medina, 43, of Ecclesville, Rio Claro, was denied bail and remanded into custody at the St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital, pending evaluation, when she appeared ­before Magistrate Kerri Honore-Narine in the Port of Spain First Magistrate’s Court to answer the charges, the Police Service said in a statement.

Two Laventille men are expected to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate today, charged with kidnapping, rape and buggery against a 21-year-old woman.

Keston Modeste, 23, of George Street, Port of Spain, and Khadir Martinez, 21, of Laventille Road, Laventille, are also jointly charged with grievous sexual assault, assault by beating, and false imprisonment.

The men were arrested following a report made by the victim who alleged she was abducted and raped last Friday.

The victim was visiting a friend in Port of Spain, when she was allegedly accosted by a man, who took her to a rooftop and proceeded to sexually assault her.

As a pundit with a mandir I am deeply affected by this mornings brutal and wanton attack on the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Freeport. Crime is in the home, Crime is in the workplace, Crime is on the highways, Crime is the Church/Mandir/Mosque, Crime is even in the jails. The Government appears to be impotent to treat with the unrelenting siege of Trinidad and Tobago by a growing “Crimetocracy”.

The Minister of National Security is seen dancing at Fun and Family Day celebrations, dancing on a boat in a fete, and dancing out of court celebrating a victory but not to been seen on the ground dealing with the criminals. All the population is fed day after day, murder after brutal murder is excuses for the ongoing incompetence of the Minister of National Security and his junior Ministers. The Philosophical Suicide as expounded by Camus as the unwillingness to grapple with the very nature of life is epitomized by Dillions dependable incompetence.

If the State is unable or unwilling to defend the citizens where even the clergy and places of worship are now open targets, then citizens should have the right to defend themselves.
