A driving instructor and his student are currently fighting for their lives at hospital after being shot by stray bullets in a shooting in Cocorite, earlier this morning.
According to reports, around 9 am, 17-year-old Steven Gonzales, of Petit Valley, and his instructor Naresh Harrilal, 50, of Cunupia, were driving in Harrilal's Nissan Almera along the westbound lane of Western Main Road when they were shot near to the Cocorite walkover.
The car veered left and crashed into the car park of an abandoned business place at the side of the road.
Residents rushed to their assistance and contacted police. Both men, who were shot in their heads, were taken to the St James Medical Complex and were transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where they remain warded.
Police believe that the men were hit by stray bullets as there was a report of a shooting at Lady Hochoy Circular Road, next to the entrance to the Community Hospital of Seventh-day Adventists, around the same time.
No one was reportedly injured in that incident as the intended target is believed to have escaped his attacker.
Police believe that the stray bullets may have crossed the eastbound lane of the Western Main Road before striking Gonzales, who was in the driver's seat. They believe that one of the bullets make have ricocheted off Gonzales and struck Harrilal in the eye.
When a news team from Guardian Media Limited visited the scene, crime scene investigators were seen processing Harrilal's vehicle.
The portion of Lady Hochoy Circular Road, where the reported shooting took place, was also cordoned off by police, who were searching the area for spent shells.
Investigations are continuing.
