Citizens are being asked to manage their water supplies as heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has led to the shutdown of a number of water treatments plants across North Trinidad.
The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) said persistent rains have led to various issues at these facilities including turbid river conditions, clogged intake screens and power failure.
The affected facilities include the Caroni Water Treatment Plant where production has been reduced from 75 million gallons daily (mgd) to 55 mgd, while operation was stopped at the Tompire, Matura, Hollis, Aripo, Quare, Guanapo, Caura, Luengo & Naranjo and Acono WTPs.
Areas affected include those supplied by the Caroni WTP - Santa Cruz, Belmont, Morvant, Cascade, St. James, Cocorite, Kelly, Caroni, Chaguanas, Longdenville, Couva, Carapichaima, Claxton Bay, Gasparillo, Marabella, Pleasantville, San Fernando, La Romaine, South Oropuche, Siparia, Debe, Penal and La Brea and those supplied by other facilities including Toco, Salybia, Valencia, parts of Arima, El Dorado, Tacarigua, Maracas - St. Joseph, among others.
WASA said the affected facilities are expected to return to service when conditions normalise at these locations.
Customers are advised to manage their water use efficiently, as it may take up to 24 hours thereafter for their scheduled pipe borne water supply to normalise.
WASA has assured that the water currently being supplied through its distribution system complies with the Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality of the World Health Organisation and is safe for use.
For further information or assistance, customers are asked to contact WASA’s Customer Call Centre toll free at 800-4420/26.

This one looks like it could linger for awhile.
Flooding look like is just a matter of time for all areas so inclined.

2:30PM: As expected, the Caroni River has broken its banks along the Tumpuna Road, Arima. As additional rainfall and runoff continues, expect additional rising of the Caroni River, in both the upper and lower Caroni River Basin. Riverine flooding is more prolonged than flash flooding. A Riverine Flood Alert - Orange level remains in effect through Tuesday 23rd Oct 2018: http://bit.ly/2OxJo4H
10:00AM Thursday 18th October 2018: Rare Riverine Flood Alert #1 – Orange Level: Riverine Flooding is Expected from 10:00AM Thursday Oct. 18th through 12:00PM Tuesday Oct. 23rd as Additional Rainfall is Forecast Over Next Several Days Over Trinidad.
Riverine Flooding is expected between Thursday, Oct 18, 2018 10:00 AM to Tuesday, Oct 23, 2018 12:00 PM hence the current Adverse Weather Alert. This "alert" status also takes into account the possibility of the event occurring. This adverse weather event is likely.
An active ITCZ is expected to produce heavy showers and thunderstorms over some areas. Riverine flooding occurs when water levels in a river over-tops its banks and spills onto surrounding areas. This type of flooding is more widespread and usually lasts for several days. Currently river levels are significantly high and are expected to rise further as more rainfall is forecast over the next several days.
The color of the watch indicates the severity of the event and probability of the event occurring. Currently, the alert level is at orange. This means that the hazard is occurring. Make preparations to protect life and property especially those residing along the Caroni River Basin. Be on the alert for rising river levels and possible over-spill. Do not take unnecessary risks.
There are NO tropical storm or hurricane watches or warnings for Trinidad and Tobago at this time
