ODPM Public Advisory - PREPARE FOR ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued an Adverse Weather Alert #1 – Yellow Level for the period Friday 21st September, 2018 3:00 a.m. to Saturday 22nd September, 2018 6:00 p.m.

Yellow level means that there is the potential for negative impacts. However, the damage can be avoided if persons monitor conditions and reduce their level of exposure.

The TTMS has advised that an active Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is expected to produce heavy showers with thunderstorm activity. Gusty winds, street and flash flooding are likely in heavy downpours and landslips/landslides are possible in areas so prone. Activity is initially expected to start near southern Trinidad, slowly progressing towards northern Trinidad.

Is our weather that unpredictable or is something else going on with the local forecast?

^ Unpredictable is the word they use when they can’t get it right...

The incompetence is with the local forecast.

Weather is seriously difficult to predict and we don't have the super-computing power, equipment and resources like what's available at the NHC in Miami. I think it's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to these bulletins, and I know there are meteorologists locally who do their best with what they have.

On the other hand, it's a running joke about local forecasting.

Tropical Storm Kirk has formed in the eastern tropical Atlantic at 8.3°N - the lowest latitude at which an Atlantic named storm has formed since 1902.

While the Hurricane in 1902 that started at the same very low latitude as Kirk in 2018 turned north and went out to sea, we should still be prepared for the worst.

The prediction tracks have been more correct in the last couple years due to better NHC data gathering and processing. This isn't local CNC weather reports. I think we should prepare, despite that it may veer slightly more north. We will get the feeder bands at least.

Very true. And the ground is already saturated from the rainfall we've had over the past few days, so feeder bands could cause more problems. :(

Hoping Kirk at least takes us to dinner first, though as of Thursday last it would technically be legal
