Tropical Depression Kirk is struggling to stay alive in the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

Tropical Depression Kirk, the 11th named storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, developed Saturday morning about 450 miles south of the Cabo Verde Islands.

There's some question now whether Kirk still has a closed circulation or whether it has opened up to a tropical wave.
This is partly due to Kirk's rather rapid westward movement, producing wind shear over the system that can rip it apart.



Even if Kirk holds together the next couple of days, it is expected to encounter a formidable wall of wind shear – the change in wind speed and/or direction with height - as it draws closer to the Lesser Antilles later this week.



This strong wind shear is expected to rip Kirk apart, possibly to the point of degenerating it into a tropical wave by the time it reaches the Windward Islands or eastern Caribbean Sea late this week.
For now, interests in the Lesser Antilles should continue to monitor the progress of Kirk.
