I always wonder about the traffic analysis that goes into these types of projects, similar to increasing the number of lanes on highways, in expanding lanes and creating interchanges are we solving traffic flow problems or simply moving the bottlenecks to other points in the road network? There are about 9 traffic lights between valsyn and Piarco and an additional 5 up to Santa Rosa Heights. What is the correct sequence of interchanges to really solve the traffic congestion? How many traffic lights we can cull for every interchange?

I would like to see the whole plan for the CRH, the curepe interchange takes away those lights but what about the two lights for Valysn north and south? Is that going to be removed and replaced with a service road like Aranguez/El Socorro? We surely can’t afford to replace every traffic light with an interchange. Would like to get a sense of the whole plan

The Curepe Interchange will make no sense without the removal of the two Valsayn lights
They probably could have been dealt with in the Grand Bazaar interchange with some minor inconvenience to the users just as the Cipriani/Bamboo South one was.

Pretty sure the Valsayn lights will be removed and people will have to use either the Curepe or Nestle interchanges to get where they have to go. Those lights currently are a huge bottleneck for westbound traffic.

The Curepe Interchange also known as the Churchill Roosevelt Highway/Southern Main Road Interchange is a major infrastructural project that is currently being executed by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
This video will give you further insight on the conceptual designs

The lights will be removed once the interchange is complete and the crossing of the lanes will be blocked

The owners not getting the prices they want, so the government will have to go via the compulsory route, which is long, complex and legally expensive

According to the drawings and video it's only like 3 properties outside of kaydonna that need to be acquired.

Highway reserves, you see all the building setbacks along the CRH? They need those too, not just what the road running through

So it looks like they are going the acquisition route instead of private purchase after all.

5% interest running for every year that the government delay paying off the value of the land, starting from the day they set foot.

Lets see how long it takes

Provisions for compulsory acquisition have existed for a very long time; the land does not have to be purchased before works begin.

As long as they don't start works and give the contractor "possession of site" before they have possession of site themselves then they should be ok. At the very least they decide to go that route, because project deadlines are set around political events and not around the actual sequence of activities taking place, they should at least have a clause for partial possession of site. Otherwise they are going to see some hefty claims coming their way which will inevitably be responded to with counter-claims for liquidated damages and then the real "fun" will begin.

The Ministry of Works has outlined its plan to construct the Curepe Flyover on Monday.

The Churchill Roosevelt Highway-CRH/Southern Main Road-SMR Curepe Flyover and Ancillary Works is the current phase of interchange improvement projects being implemented as part of the larger East-West Corridor Expansion and Improvement Works Programme.

In a media release from the Ministry of Works and Transport, the ongoing programme was initiated as a solution to alleviate traffic congestion along the highway with the elimination of traffic signals along the corridor and the upgrade of intersections.

"Commuters who traverse the east-west corridor every day will understand the criticality of an interchange at the CRH/SMR intersection," said the Ministry. "This is further underscored by recent traffic volume data. In 2012, we undertook a traffic study to assess the impact of the proposed interchange at Churchill Roosevelt Highway/Southern Main Road in Curepe. We collected and analysed traffic volume data and made some projections (using a 2% volume increase per year) for the year 2040."

Included in their projections are:

-Morning delays through the Curepe intersection on CRH would decrease from 677 seconds (about 11 minutes) per vehicle in 2012, to 19 seconds per vehicle in 2040.

-Afternoon delays would decrease even more dramatically, from 1,317 seconds (about 22 minutes) per vehicle in 2012 to 19 seconds per vehicle in 2040.

-On the Southern Main Road, morning delays would decrease from 575 seconds (about 9.5 minutes) per vehicle in 2012, to 35 seconds per vehicle in 2040.

-Afternoon delays would decrease from 1,263 seconds (about 21 minutes) per vehicle in 2012 to 66 seconds (about 1 minute) per vehicle in 2040.

The Ministry also confirmed the scope of works will include:

-Construction of an overpass with two cloverleaf sections at the intersection of CRH and SMR, Curepe and other ramps;

-Widening and re-alignment of the CRH to accommodate six lanes and frontage roads north and south of the CRH;

-Construction of a roundabout in the south-eastern quadrant near Kay Donna; and

-Re-alignment of the Southern Main Road.

NIDCO has been confirmed to execute the project and is responsible for the procurement of a design-build contractor and other related services as well as for the overall management of the project through to completion.

The Ministry went on to highlight the several benefits the interchange is expected to bring.

"In addition to bringing much-needed relief to the thousands of motorists who travel along the CRH each day, the Curepe Interchange Project is expected to generate major activity in an otherwise sluggish construction sector. Commercial opportunities will redound to small contractors, skilled and unskilled workers and the business community, in general, throughout the life of the project."

My running assumption is that they need that median space to accommodate service roads to access valsyn north and south, so they could remove the two traffic lights, they won’t be able to get space on the outer band of the existing highway. They will need enough space to accommodate 10 lanes in total so the trees have to be sacrificed.

Gonna miss the aesthetics of the Pouis as its been a staple for decades but that’s the price of progress I guess.
