Lee Sing anxious over Pandays’ meeting

Former PNM minister Mariano Browne has been invited to the upcoming meeting involving the Basdeo Panday family which will explore new political possibilities - but he says he will be out of T&T.

However, ex-mayor Louis Lee Sing, says he would attend the meeting if he was invited.

Browne yesterday confirmed that he had been invited.

“But I already had something on overseas,” he added.

Browne declined to comment on the May 20 meeting.

Former prime minister Basdeo Panday and his daughter Mickela will spearhead the meeting at Gaston Court, Chaguanas.

Panday said it was being held by a number of young people who want to seek a direction, politically.

It is widely speculated the meeting - open to the public - is being held to assess possible chances for a new political party and for Mickela Panday to lead this. On Tuesday, Panday didn’t rule out a new party being formed.

Lee Sing said, “If I get an invitation I’ll attend. Anything that represents the possibility of a better political future for T&T remains of interest to me,” he said.

“Mr Panday still has an important role to play in the politics of T&T and I think the same applies to Ms Panday,” he said.

“As to whether she is the best person to take T&T in a direction of peace, harmony and stability and offer the country discipline, tolerance and productivity, is left to be seen. So we have to be cautious on how we move from where we are as we have - time and again - jumped from the frying pan into the fire,” Lee Sing said.

Lee Sing added, “Many people have leadership aspirations. But it’s not about being able to get up and talk and ramajay, as we’ve seen a lot of that with (Prime Minister) Keith Rowley over the years. It’s much deeper than that.”

“I hope any group prepared to present a challenge to T&T to do something better, will certainly demand of itself the best leadership it can give. So I commend all who summon troops or engage people in a possibility that offers better governance,” he said.

NACTA poll: Kamla slightly favoured over Rowley for PM

OPPOSITION Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is slightly more favoured than Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley for this country’s Prime Minister according to a North American Caribbean Teachers Association (NACTA) poll.

NACTA said in a release the poll, conducted last month, showed there was not much of a gap between the popularity of both leaders.

“Kamla’s popularity continues to remain high among UNC loyalists while Rowley has seen declining numbers among PNM supporters.”

NACTA said the poll’s findings showed widespread dissatisfaction with the incumbent PNM government as well as the opposition UNC.

“People have lost faith in Government and Opposition politicians to improve their lives with many saying they want something new.

There is widespread voter apathy with people turned away from both major parties leaving room for a third option which is nowhere on the horizon.

The poll shows that neither party is able to garner significant support from the wide spectrum of ethnicities and religious groups outside of their voting blocs; neither one has been able to unite the nation, giving space to any rising third force.”

NACTA pointed out earlier surveys consistently showed that although the PNM is unpopular, swing voters were not drawn towards the opposition UNC, critical for electoral wins in marginal constituencies.

NACTA said the findings showed that corruption was a major issue affecting the government nationwide and other issues that worry people including crime (law and order) and the economy, specifically unemployment, inflation, agriculture, development, and salary.

“Although disgruntled with PNM governance, party supporters as well swing voters are not gravitating towards the Opposition UNC saying it needs urgent transformation with credible faces and a willingness to collaborate with other groups. At this time, the Opposition does not pose a serious threat to PNM’s re-election.”

NACTA reported the poll, conducted by Dr Vishnu Bisram, interviewed respondents randomly to represent the demographics of the population and only the views of likely voters were used in the report.

On the night of the elections one of their reps was on TV with his chart, crunching figures, analyzing historical data — the whole shebang, confident of an PP/UNC victory in St. Joseph. Then, as the night progressed and it was clear that the PNM cut their arse the hosts stopped asking for his analysis. It was as if he was never there...funny as hell...

Truth be told which political person can talk about it and not seem hypocritical?

They all in or were part of parties that are built on corruption and even if they didn't partake personally they stood by more or less quietly and allowed it to happen.

In Indo-trini politics, if you get fedup of the leader you run off and create a new party fracturing the parent party which never truly dies. Once the leader changes, the breakaways go back to the parent party and get reabsorbed. They die a natural death during the re-absorption process, when they try to break off again or by the electorate.

This is going to be 2007 all over again.

When people were fedup with Panday, COP was born led by Dookeran and that split the vote in 2007 elections. Once Panday left many went back "home". COP was unofficially reabsorbed into the UNC during the partnership years to the point they were indistinguishable except the party colors yellow and white. They trying to separate after the 2015 defeat but that party is dead.

It is going to be hard for a UNC spinoff to gain the Afro-vote unless the leader is THAT charismatic and Growley ultimately facks up. Jack Warner was that guy but his FIFA sins caught up with him. That unwavering PNM loyalty is still there even though more and more afro-trinis are questioning it.
