Termites in Wooden Roof

Postby Veritrini » July 12th, 2018, 11:04 am

Hey just looking for a second opinion on the subject situation.

'House with new galvanized roof, the fancy type. Underneath is plywood and a wooden framing which joins the house the roofing.' I'm not too knowledgeable here. I guess its how roofing was done some years prior.

Termites have been found on two rooms of a house. I have been told to redo the roof and another person says you can eradicate the termites with pest control.

Looking for some suggestions here and even an experienced person to visit and consult.

For anyone to give good advice you will need to answer:
How old is the roof frame?
Is the wood painted?
What kind of wood?
Apart from that, I had new furniture that was destroyed by termites, it’s amazing that furniture stores would sell furniture that is not termite treated.
Either way, it would be best to call in a pest control company first to get their opinion and cost IMHO.

Galvanised might have to be removed and framing re-done and then sheeting.

Get someone to check the quality of the rafters to determine how bad it is.

Pest control company may recommend spraying just to get the busine$$.

It doesn't make sense spending that $$$ if the roof is too far gone.

How long ago the galvanize sheets went on? If it was recent, the roofman should have spotted the termites and dealt with it one time, including any wood that has been compromised.

You can use chemicals to remove the termites or call a professional to do it. Roofman will have to come and inspect the wooden rafters to make sure none is compromised and change if necessary. It sounds like the wood wasn't pressure treated with chemicals to prevent termites and rot before installation, or it was simply coated with a paintbrush.

Call a professional roofman to remove the termites, inspect the rafters and "re-treat" them if necessary.

Plywood is ice cream for termites

You should find out what type of termites
There are basically three types

1- wood lice , live directly in wood
2- subterranean, live deep underground and make mud tracks
3-nasutes, live in big nests above ground and makes tracks out of vegetation matter

Subterranean does eat fast and require drilling floor for barrier treatment

All very good suggestions and all along the same lines. The sheeting was done 4 years ago. The rafters were built in 1997.

Yes all the wood is painted brown. I was able the pull a layer off the plywood ceiling and saw very fine white trails in a mesh design. Someone mentioned that it was a type of termite.

In other areas along the rafters you can see the typical brown tunnels.

Any suggestions for a good roof man?

fine trails is subterranean termites

those termites live very deep in the ground and come up through the walls/foundation
they eat the wood but have to travel back down to the nest and feed the rest of the nest the wood material
they need to go back down or they will dry out as they get moisture from below
what you see above is just a fraction of the nest which is deep underground

the treatment is basically drill deep holes around the walls and pump termiticide in and around the soil
this way they cant get a route to come to the wall and head up.

if you do this treatment you dont have to remove the termites that you see in the wood as they will die from heat/thirst as they cannot get back down.

spraying or painting the surface the rafters/wood will not work as it only affect the surface of the wood.
you could still do this in case regular wood lice termites show up.

if the rafters still have structural integrity you may not need to replace them.
