Parking meters coming for POS, Sando

FRUSTRATED motorists finding difficulty to get a park in the capital city may have an eventual reprieve as an expression of interest will be issued by Government for the provision of parking meters in Port of Spain and San Fernando, reported Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan.

He was speaking Thursday at the post-Cabinet media conference held at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann's.

He said Cabinet on Thursday took the decision for the expression of interest which will be done "very soon" and see his ministry doing a pilot project for parking meters in the two cities. He added there were plans to then extend the parking meters to other major towns in Trinidad and hopefully Tobago.

Sinanan also reported that Cabinet agreed on the start of the Waterfront project in San Fernando with the widening of the Lady Hailes Avenue and the inclusion of a boardwalk and a bypass road for that project. He said the project included a bike path and very soon the ministry will unveil the coastal work to be done by the ministry.

"So it is a project we are really looking forward to at the Ministry of Works and we expect to have boots on the ground within the next two months on this project."

It should be clear to all and sundry that these Pee oN deM car-car-holes have found in the local motoring public a lucrative source of income to help offset their budget shortfalls. Under this "caring" Government you are now paying more for:

*Fuel (subsidy removed)
*Inspections (fees increased)
*Tyres (environmental tax)
*Parts (devaluation of $TTD, gross increase in VAT receipts)
*Ticket-able offences (Fines increased)

And soon to be added to that list: Parking Meter "Fees".

Waiting patiently to see which sh!tlicker(s) getting the contract to supply, install and maintain those meters...:|

But just wait till they implement those $6000 red light camera fines. $6000 multiplied by 200 violations per day per light. Just think how much money dat is!

these parking meters gonna make additional parking spaces? meters gonna make the road longer/wider? ppl could park on both sides of the road 24/7 when they install these meters? if you park & the meter runs out what's the penalty, same ticket ent?

looking like just another way to bleed a shilling out of John Public's pocket without doing anything major while eliminating the wrecker fee & fattening somebody pocket for supplying equipment.

Knowing Trinidad and Tobago, they gonna have a booth somewhere in town with a sour faced attendant to collect the money however she will never have change and it will be a cash only system.

Next on the PNM agenda of taxation would be toll booths. Mandatory for all cars to purchase electronic transponders.

They tried it in Georgetown, with exorbitant fees. people protested heavily, kick up a fuss and they were removed.

I can see the same happening here, Chamber of commerce will lament goods vehicles paying for parking, meters will be installed at a great fee, party supporter will eat a food and then they will either be decommissioned or slowly put out of service through attrition.

Sensible people don't mind parking meter fees, property taxes etc. However when the money is pissed away or lost through corruption, therein lies the problem.

How would they work though? Are you limited as to how much time you can park?

If ppl can just park and pay on BOTH sides of the road wouldn't that just cause traffic congestion?

I mean the whole idea behind no parking laws is too ensure the road is free for vehicles to move about right?

if it had places to park in sando, it might work but it hardly have long stretches dedicated to parking.

u might get about 3 cars here, 4 cars there, 1 there, and along high street and mucorapo street, its occupied by street vending

If this or any political group running this place had any kinda sense, congestion in the capital city could be easily fixed with a few steps.

1-Get all schools out of PoS - Set up a school district somewhere & let them go there. it go take time & money to do but it would eliminate the need for about 30% of the ppl coming into PoS daily that causing congestion with no real business to do in the city.
2-Demolish every one of the houses in Beetham & relocate the population - fence the area & turn the whole thing into a car park, where ppl could pay a daily/weekly/monthly fee to park & either walk into PoS or run a PTSC shuttle from the parking facility to different routes throughout the city. The expenditure for this could be recovered real fast, I dare say within a 5 year term by parking fees & bus fares. the only real long term running expense would be personnel, such as cashiers, security, etc.
