Petrotrin refinery to shut down

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » August 23rd, 2018, 10:39 am

Refinery staff came to work this morning and are reeling in shock here....apparently 3pm yesterday decision was made by government to shut down the refinery and terminate the employees...confirmation that it is true... we have enough oil to refine for two weeks...they are not making provisions to buy more oil...so looking like 1900 refinery workers are now out of a job.

Sauce?
I knew that they weren't training any more Refinery Operators since last year, but it seems hard to believe that petrotrin would pull an ipsl jus so...

It was also kinda strange that roget was kinda hinting that the refinery would be privatized on the news on Monday, but the story just seems to farfetched...

if they lock out refining staff....then whats the relevance of how much oil they have to refine??
no staff=no refining.

Something eh adding up

They didn’t lock them out. Just made an announcement to the staff. Guess severance will be offered over the coming days and weeks.

agreed, "announcement" was not the right word to use there, but enough people know and are talking.

There's also talk that Trinmar may be contracted out, the regiment will take up post in the refinery as security, employees will get severance and can re-apply for their jobs and the refinery will no longer be part of Petrotrin.

None of that I can confirm, but it's information being shared around this morning.

Yeah same crap that was spread on tuner in January. A whole thread was dedicated back then to the misinformation also.

a while back I asked seperately 2 employees of Petrotrin and both union members what they would do if they were given control and authority to fix Petrotrin.

Both said they would first lock out all workers.

All i know is two Contractor Company Onwer Colleaugues of mine got paid off this week....each a single deposit for THREE years worth of work they've been clamoring for....neither contractor knows of the other..

and then there's this:

The word is
Upstream operations such as Trinmar going to be contracted out
Rowley said Trinidad coming out of the refining business

1 - cabinet agreed on restructuring
2 - agreed there will be job cuts
3 - employees won't go home empty handed
4 - the above will be done in the next month
5 - the regiment has been asked to take up post or be more present in the refinery and bond
6- all employees will be escorted by police to take their belongings and will have to apply back for their jobs
7- they pushing to commission the line and bond in piarco to avoid any fuel issues

If you watch the video on tv6 you'll basically get an idea where everything is heading. So don't be surprised when it finally happens...

Also, just remember that Rowley was referencing caroni when talking about petrotrin at the PNM family day. And we all know what happened to caroni...

Just one... the other one due in 3-4 years or so.
The union cannot comprehend that even though they have had a profitable quarter the total liability is over 2 billion dollars.

To get out of that hole will require some serious sacrifices which is integral for the company to function. the union cannot understand that and imagine last year January they for an increase in salary even though they had 4 consecutive years and of loss. The government last January also loaned them another 200 million usd to cover the operational and salary increase.
However it seemed they never changed their way of operation... the mindset of being government owned will result in inefficiencies and also a bailout all the time for their continued wastage.

Hope Epsinet can stick around and enforce the required changed needed.

I researched petrotrin last year
"The staff count of Petrotrin is over thousand and a wage bill of over $2 billion TTD per year this accounts for approximately 50% of the operating cost is the company. The staff count will have to be reduced drastically and measures put in place to measure the optimum process is adequately staffed by skilled individuals. Proper job evaluations for all workers should be done and this should be reviewed and mapped to meet the training and skillset of the existing staff. The use of Balanced Scorecard is very useful and can be adapted to suit Petrotrin. It does require a lot of skilled persons and time as well the support from top level management. Also this must be properly communicated throughout the organization and other areas must be looked at as well especially if this will be a success in Strategy Development and Implementation going forward. The key feature here once developed is sustainability. Organizations should have proper business continuity plan for workers leaving the organization and this must not stop the continued enforcement and implementation of such a valuable process in Strategy Development and Implementation.

According to the International Journal of Scientific and Technology Research Volume 3, Issue 3, March 2014 the average amount of manpower needed to be employed in a 400,000 bpd refinery is 6000 persons (Onuke Oscar Sunny 2014). Petrotrin refinery capacity is less than 200, 000 bpd and employs over 5000 persons.

While I was researching Petrotrin last year I came accross an accepted standard for production vs persons

It’s not shut down. The talk is that they are going to shut it down. The govt does not want to be in the refinery business. It may run until end of September. There’s a meeting planned for Tuesday, so I guess details will come out there.

I work petrotrin though not in the refinery but I can say for a fact that nothing is confirmed so far. The government has the sale of the refinery as an option at this time

Thanks for the clarification. The original post is misleading and glad Duane clarified since this speculation could cause some ppl to panic resulting in long lines at the gas stations.

Yeah union has to meet with the board before anything can happen. Next week this is happening. Board has a proposal of Temps being let go and vsep for 55 and over. Managers across the org out of the bargaining unit are getting the letters soon though.

Strangely enough in the engineering and maintainence sections more than 80 percent of the workers are either temps or over 55 who are due to retire soon anyway. Matter of fact certain sections are understaffed as older workers retire with no one to take their place. So if they get rid of these groups I can't see how the fields will run

The options available to Petrotrin to have any hope to become viable are all extremely brutal.
The market today and the forseeable future cannot support cost of operations and accrued liabilities which Petrotrin maintains.
Historically, the situation fits the circumstances which caused other to fold and establish a new incarnation.
The employees ,union and service providers need to 'risk manage' their new realities.
Govt will not get out without significant financial exposure when guarantees are factored in.
…….This is going to be messy.

This may be the best way to go. Give staff first option to be rehired once qualified for the position. Negotiate new terms and salaries. Roget go be out of a job.....when last has he actually done any work other than union matters. For years figures show they are overstaffed for the size of operations and overpaid for many of the positions.

All because of unfinished corrupt administration buildings, World GTL and ULSD which are all failures and incomplete with billions wasted under the PNM.
