Well bro you and others are in a tight spot.

Employers mostly want ready make engineers (those with work experiences). Sad part is that only a few companies willing to train fresh UWI grads.

Options are to go into teaching until you can score a Mech job or migrate. Keep looking at the other Islands for the smaller jobs and work your way up from there. UWI grads I think have free movement within CARICOM so look at the other Islands , even places like Aruba ect.

Wish you all the best bro

Get first class honours or a good upper seconds. Do projects and showcase your work and abilities online.

A lot of countries now have heavy visa restrictions when it comes to expatriate workers (including the middle east and some parts of Africa). Most of these countries which hired a lot of expat workers in the past are now in a position to hire their own qualified citizens as opposed to bringing foreign nationals (also cheaper for the companies). The few companies hiring in Africa and the middle east are looking mainly for European , UK passport holders as management and Indian/Filipino passport holders for technical & non technical staff (low salaries) because its very easy to get their work visas in these regions as long as they are qualified also their mob/demob costs to their home countries are fairly cheap.
Not to mention the clients here specifically request Western looking expats as management (no need to explain why).

Best advice here, especially the bolded part. Also, get involved in some big volunteer group - you meet people, network and improve your management skills at the same.

Who you know?

Or......who know you?

The answer to that question will say how attractive you are.

Good luck.

good luck....

network network network... be prepared to do work not in your field of study... like document control, assistant, proof reading procedures and execution plans etc.

try guyana, send out CV to recruitment firms, look for small contractors that do mech/fabrication work

Adding in my 2 cents also.

In addition to this, I strongly recommend that whatever field of study you are in, the best way to network and showcase is in that field's professional society. If you do electrical eng, get involved in the IEEE. If you do petroleum geoscience, get into the AAPG and GSTT.

These societies have field trips, mixers and conferences, and allow students to present their projects/theses in final year of undergrad and such. Go to the events and meet new graduates, and young and old professionals alike.
