Re: T&T Economy not looking good for 2019, Central Bank says TT economy slowing down

The Central Bank sounded an alarm on Friday in its Quarterly Monetary Policy Report that the Trinidad and Tobago economy is slowing down.

Economist Indera Sagewan-Alli says she has to agree with their forecast for 2019.

Off course it must slow down , here we have a goverment that is not attracting new bussines or growth.

Instead they look to tax people more making their spending power less .

Good job PNM

Accepting that those who are in control have evidenced their inability to meaningfully grapple with our economic and financial fortunes at this time (the last 2 years performance is clear), the average citizen must step-up, or our collapse will be self evident in the worse ways possible.
We are not powerless and must demonstrate this by changing our expenditure and work habits/culture.
Household must work budgets, more cooking at home and less outside food, more creative family focused recreation, less absenteeism and let those with the fancy rhetoric know that they are being appraised and their failings are not going unnoticed.
We also need to embrace the power of community and collectively fix the things we can and take pride in that which is ours.
My suggestions should in no way be considered as a surrender and may mean that when fools holding office take ownership of people driven transformation they will face the backlash of public ridicule and loss of support at the polls.
Maybe at this time we just don't have anymore choices.

the difference between t&t and venezuela, comes down to the strength of private enterprise.

in vene, the gov't systematically undermined private enterprise for "the public good". They have strict price controls, so a private enterprise cannot legally make a highly profitable product.

in T&T, highly profitable companies are free to expand a make more highly profitable products. The result is a resilient economy, no matter how incompetent the PNM government happens to be.

austerity measures has been a failure in most if not all the econonies that tried it.
Government should be trying to spend it's way back via tax refunds and breaks

They might do that eventually, but it seems the plan right now is to stop the upward mobility of the citizenry and create a hardcore working class.

Think about it, they're increasing the cost of living though taxation, destroying jobs — especially in high paying industries thereby increasing the supply of labour available for the remaining mid-low level positions. Unchecked Venezuelan and CARICOM immigration is just exacerbating the problem and the labour unions have been castrated.

Employers are spoiled for choice, if you eh want to work for what they're offering — buss it, there's plenty more to choose from.

What we're witnessing is a surreptitious attempt at social restructuring - the frightening thing is it seems to be working.

Anyways allyuh vote fuh dat. Grate is the Pee oN deM...:|

What ever deal them fellas cut to sell the crude, they good with it. They just need enough profit to pay their salaries and subsidize their fuel and groceries and they good.

Rowlers had already said that the citizens will have to pull the economy through.

To hell with the people, they remain insulated.

And they have a vicious hound to bring the people to heel. Any body vex, take some knee to neck.

So too would the tens (maybe hundreds if accounting for inflation) of billions stolen between 1962 to 2010

The planning exercise, serious business must engage for 2019 now has to accommodate so many external variables that many may have no choice but to look at 'folding'.
The cumulative impact of new charges, unavailability of forex, failing infrastructure, and increases in the cost of business financing options make the 2019 outlook for both sellers and buyers 'grey'.
I conservatively predict an increase in prices of auto parts during the first quarter of at least 10% with a fall in the value of gross sales shrinking (people just don't have the money).
Buckle-up, we in for a real bumpy ride.

Randolphin is full of crap. Where is your direct proof of money gone. What pnm did was empty twice after the 2 oil booms and very little to show. Try again.

T&T Transition from mixed economy to capitalism?

Postby airuma » January 11th, 2019, 9:40 am

Are we witnessing the beginning of a shift from a mixed economy to capitalism? What are you thoughts?

Unless my definitions are flawed, we were never socialist.

Ok, the government provides health care, education and housing and seems to control the economy.
Are we capitalist with welfare then?

it was called a mixed economy when I was taught.

Neither extreme will work on a small economy like ours.
