TT$20,000 fine for making a cook without a license

Postby stikid09 » February 15th, 2019, 9:32 am

If you’re looking to make a cook at the river or beach, be prepared to pay a $20,000 fine for setting an outdoor fire without a permit.

This fine for having an open flame during the dry season was recently increased from $1500 to $20,000, effective January 1st this year.

And Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat says the fine applies to ALL persons, including those who generally ‘make a cook’ at the river.

He says before doing so, persons are being encouraged to obtain a fire permit which cost $10 from the nearest fire station or Forestry Division.

Previously, anyone found guilty of the offence was subject to a fine of $1,500 and six months jail time, as well as paying for the expenses incurred from putting out the fire.

During the Forest Fire Season, which starts December 1 to until June 30 of each year, a permit is required to light outdoor fires.

^ Attorney Larry Lalla issued a rebuttal saying the Minister is wrong and the Act allows for fire for cooking purposes without the need for a permit once certain conditions are met.

“Under the Agriculture Fires Act, Section 18, it is permissible to have an outdoor fire for the purpose of cooking, without first having to get a fire permit. So as people ordinarily do, go by the river and make a cook – that is fine. You don’t have to first get a fire permit. What the law requires you if you’re doing that is to ensure that wherever you [are] having that fire, there is no material around that will ignite and that could start a bush fire. And further, the law requires you when you’re finished cooking to out the fire.”

Wouldn't be the 1st time a politician in Trinidad spoke without full knowledge.
And alas Clarence is an attorney, one would think law would be his forte
