Students were shot on Belmont Circular Road Wednesday afternoon in a drive-by shooting targeting a driver.

They were rushed to the Port of Spain General Hospital for emergency treatment.

The shooting took place outside the Providence High School around 2.40 pm, less than 200 metres from the Belmont Police Station.

Two of the children were under the age of 5, and one of the students was a 16-year-old girl.

The target, the 38-year-old James Gordon of Maracas, was the driver of a white Hilux vehicle.

He was also shot.

A senior investigator told Guardian Media that based on the initial information they obtained, a White Hilux was parked along the roadway when a black Hyundai Tucson heavily tinted pulled up alongside the Hilux vehicle.

The gunmen opened fire on the vehicle and also struck other parked vehicles along the roadway as several school children and other pedestrians ran for cover.

Investigators believe that the intended target was the driver of the Hilux and say during the shooting they believe that children who were walking along the pavement in the direct path of the shooting were injured.

They are yet to determine if any children were seated in the Hilux vehicle.

Education Minister Anthony Garcia has expressed concern over the incident.

Officials at Belmont Government Primary School, which is closeby, said they were forced to lock their gates and didn't allow students to leave until parents arrived.

Residents said the gunshots sounded like they came from an automatic machine gun.

Police have put out an all-points-bulletin for the vehicle believed to have been driven by the assailants.

Investigators say that they have not been able to ascertain the extent of the children's injuries and are awaiting word from medical authorities.

Guardian Media will update this story as more information becomes available.

Normal life in belmont these days so much that everybody is used to it.Shootouts almost every night to the point people don't even runaway anymore.

Irony, police were simultaneously rubbing Sand-Man down in POS on a tip and got a guy with a gun,it was ok because he was an estate constable with a legal gun working with a firm,.....Sand-Man is in the white hat spread out, dirt bike outrider too lol..they walked away from this too,but they definitely have their plate full . The perils of the life..but dem men outta timin to carry out that attack in that school zone,and at that time of day..

gang war fare or not, it takes a really sad hopeless group of COWARDS to open fire IN FRONT of a SCHOOL with hundreds of little children present. I hope those gangsters are proud.. and I hope that all of the gangster children die a disgustingly painful death.

This is the approach needed.

I dont care about gangsters shooting other gangsters in gangster schools with gangster children.

Its a pity though the Hilux windscreen gone through.
