Power blackout in Tobago
Sean Douglas
TOBAGO has been hit by an island-wide power outage since about 5.30 pm, on Friday, said TTEC communications manager Annabelle Brasnell. Speaking at 6.20 pm, she said TTEC hoped to start getting a supply to customers within an hour, although saying that the cause of the outage was not yet known. “Our engineers are working on it. Our focus is on restoring supply to customers and then we will look for the cause.” Asked by Newsday, she declined to speculate whether recent bad weather was to blame.

Whether someone will have to pay T&TEC for the crash damage done to a light pole on the Solomon Hochoy Highway near the Gasparillo overpass on December 18, is still to be determined.
This is according to T&TEC's corporate communications manager Annabelle Bransnell.
In a telephone interview with the Express last Friday, Bransnell said, she could not comment on the specifics of the Gasparillo crash that killed four people.
“Regarding the accident in Gasparillo, I don’t know where the company has reached with its investigation,” Brasnell said.
She did, however, explain the course of action usually adopted by the company when there is damage to its property.
“Generally speaking if somebody damages our infrastructure, we have the recourse to ensure that they pay for the replacement of that structure, and that is based on normal insurance practices. This is not specific to one case, and I don’t know what is going on with that (Gasparillo crash) case,” Brasnell said.
Brasnell noted the sensitivity of the case, but wanted to inform the public what the protocols were in place, in the event that member of the public damages T&TEC property.
She said, “It is not just a light pole but any infrastructure. Whether in the form of a car crash or any other way if there is damage to our infrastructure as with anybody who has their property damage, we have the recourse to get that person to repair or replace the infrastructure.”
Djenne Hills-Dyer, 30, of Buen Intento, Princes Town, Shahdon Winchester, 27, of Buen Intento, Princes Town, Michael Bradshaw of Buen Intento, and Keaton Nicholas, of New Grant, tragically lost their lives in the fiery Gasparillo car crash on December 18.
Police say Winchester, a national footballer, was driving his Nissan Qashqai SUV south along the highway when the vehicle skidded off the road in heavy rainfall at around 5.30a.m.
The vehicle slammed, rear-end first, into a T&TEC pole, bringing down a 50,000 volt transformer and live wires.
The surrounding areas were without power as a result of the crash.
