Cheap / Free Oxygen Needed

Postby bluefete » September 25th, 2019, 5:11 pm

A pardner of mine got sick recently and now has to buy oxygen to live.

He bought a small tank for about $300.00 plus the cost of the relevant valves.

He said that Trinitogas in Sea Lots do refills of oxygen for about $150.00. But that will only last him about 2-3 days.

Is there somewhere else that does cheaper refills of oxygen?

Sorry to hear that about your friend.
Check back Trintogas, ask about rental and refills of large cylinders. If they don't do it try IGL, or maybe IRP.
What he needs is a couple of the big tanks like the size they use for welding gases, and filled with as high a pressure as possible, and set them up on a Y system. So when one low or empty, switch to the other till the refill arrives.

hope your friend gt and recovers soon, or at least his situ improves. that's a real stressful and depressing position to be in.

Free is dubious at best. Check alternate sources like IGL, AA Laquis, or any medical supply company and comparison shop

IGL was $42 to fill a small tank and $80 for the big ones earlier this year when we had to buy for my father. He passed away 2 days after we rented the big tank from Trius so we ended up returning a full tank.

IGL Pt Lisas does filling 7 days a week as well.

how we'll do those oxygen concentrator machines work?
I see them being advertised for home use.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I will follow up for him.

It is really stressful for his family because they are not "rich" and he is the sole breadwinner (self-employed).

His lungs ended up with a mass, from many years of spray-painting vehicles (at least that is what he was told by medical personnel).

I see those, particularly the portable ones. They might be a good option for someone that doesn't need a lot or all day use. the questions tho is what's the cost to maintain a unit, & how many l/m can it produce, as well as how clean is the O2 it & what grade of O2 it puts out

last thing you want is to have to be inhaling O2 with contaminants like oil vapors. Safest bet, fastest bet is as I said, dual tank Y system.

And op, if using high pressure tanks, let whoever is handling the tanks for the patient at home know to BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL when handling them. making or changing gonnections or opening or closing valves. O2 is EXTREMELY combustible & easily ignited without flames. Heat from friction, chemical reactions, etc can trigger a dangerous event.
I've seen two oxygen related events.
One was some years ago I saw a tank ignite while a fella was changing a connection. Valve wasn't totally sealed, apparently there was a very very very small leak at the valve, and the cause of the ignition was the oils in the sweat on his hands and the heat generated by the friction of the threads on the valve. He did not survive.
The other was a fella that opened a full high pressure tank too wide too fast to transfer O2 to a smaller tank. He survived, but minus a hand, an eye, his hearing in one ear and he got some serious burns
It is necessary for life, but pure concentrated O2 is nothing to play with. just be careful

Here is the number 770-3312, I have rene's personal number if you like I can send it via PM.

I get my tank filled in like 5 minutes and costs me $25.00 but thats the O2 tank from the victor mini oxy-acetylene set, not sure how big yours is.

The best option depends on how much oxygen you need and how often.

For the user that needs oxygen all day, an oxygen concentrator is the best option.

The wheeled tanks that you typically see hold about 600 liters of oxygen (5 hours at 2 lpm). There are oxygen concentrators that provide that much oxygen or more but they are expensive.

I believe that I saw $42 VI for a type E tank refill. That's good for 10 hours at 1.0 lpm.

A 5 lpm oxygen concentrator is $9,000 VI from AALaquis.

If you use oxygen for 10 hours a day, the oxygen concentrator pays for itself in seven months.

apparently you didn't notice the words "cheap' or "free" in the heading, indicating that in this instance finances are an issue

it would, but is if the patient can afford to buy it and how urgent the need is for the O2 right now.
to me it sounding kinda urgent, so he gonna still need a tank to tide him over till he can buy that generator & till it gets here, & that is if he can afford it.

Massy Gas. Small bottle was $28 to refill and the big bottle was $110. That was lil more than 5 years ago.
Small bottle system by Massy Gas was $4,000. You can rent a big bottle with a $2,000 deposit.

Trius charges a $900 deposit for renting the large tanks from them.

Again, thanks to everyone. I spoke to him this morning but he could not stay on the phone for long as he started coughing and went out of breath.

He said that Mt. Hope does refills for about $100.00

Just an update. My pardner did not make it and passed on 6th October.

Thanks again to all for the advice and for allowing his family to make his last days a little easier.

Respect!

He was a mechanic for many years and he also used to paint cars.

Apparently, he did not always use the proper equipment (sometimes none at all) when spray painting and in July this year, he started having breathing problems.

Doctors discovered a mass on his lungs. He spent a month in hospital and after a couple weeks at home, that was it.
