Tesla reveals their Cybertruck pickup

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » November 22nd, 2019, 6:27 am

Can’t say I like the way it looks

Tesla made electric passenger cars mainstream with the Model S and Model 3 sedans and the Model X crossover, and now its turning to one of the most important segments out right now—pickup trucks. At a bizarre event in Los Angeles, Elon Musk debuted the Tesla Cybertruck, the first truck from the brand. It'll go up against upcoming EV pickups from Ford and GM, plus new kids on the block, Rivian.

Musk said at the reveal that "we need something different" than today's pickup trucks. And yes, that's certainly the case here.

Looks like the designers really liked Virtua Fighter 1.

Looks like Jeremy Clarkson had a hand with the body design :?
How that could possibly be streamlined and energy efficient against wind drag at any speed? I feel this is just a prototype model to get people talking, but the next iteration will be the real deal.

*It will start at $39,900 and begin production in 2021.

Apparently it's supposed to be inspired by the vehicles in the Blade Runner movies

Tesla isn’t going to last IMO. They’re doing all the heavy lifting to bring electric cars to market and up their popularity and the traditional car makers gonna beat them in the end with better quality, better distribution and competitive pricing.

Folded plane bodies can be some of the most aerodynamic shapes possible. The designs date back to late 70's.

The body shape chosen by Tesla for the Cybertruck was a consequence of the designers' incorporating the built in sliding bed cover. The bed cover slides out of the way and onto the roof.

That shape is actually not very good aerodynamically at ground speeds. Even at flight subsonic and supersonic speeds that airfoil shape is not ideal for aerodynamic efficiency but rather increased maneuverability among other things.

If looks is a problem, you could always go for the Ford, GM or Rivian offerings.

Was now going to point out that shapes and angles like this can be extremely aerodynamic, but I'm not privy to their wind models.

Honestly, I might be in the minority but I like the design, very futuristic and I sort of hate current car model designs especially those coming from Japan and Korea (but many low end euros are similar). I hate the bulbous curves, large high backs and boring exteriors.

Interestingly, it's also made of 3 mm thick stainless steel sheets. The use of stainless for body panels becomes possible when the tooling is not overly complex. John DeLorean famously made the same decision for his his car.

That shape is not aerodynamic in the context of what you’re thinking. Because you see something on a fighter jet or stealth bomber you assume it’s aerodynamic.

If you wish to relate any solid form to anything aerodynamic take your references from gliders. They are not powered so would have the best characteristics of aerodynamic flow wrt form and skin characteristics.
