I wont say full lockdown...but further restrictions, work from home, 50-50 staff etc

that should have been done already when we hit 100 cases in a day

but with the new variant, we need to lockdown hard & early for 2 weeks, similar to new zealand to eradicate this variant b4 it's too late, which by next week will probably be too late. otherwise playing the wait & see game is going to have us at a high rate till most ppl vaccinated, which means restrictions on for months/years.

Eradication is next to impossible though, especially as Venezuelans will still come across to T&T regardless.

But I do agree, a full hard lockdown for 2-3 weeks is what's needed. It's the only thing that can work, otherwise all these things like closing bars, rotations etc. is just spinning top in mud.

Minister Hinds indicated that India and USA have the Brazil strain, and they don't have illegal Venezuelans, so he's not sure how it reached here in T&T.

Fellow citizens,

Well before the Easter vacation I took the time out to raise with the national community the coming of a period of extended holidays and weekends centered around the Easter vacation, other holidays and religious celebrations.

I appealed for a national recognition of our coming vulnerability and asked that even as we were getting tired of the stresses that there were dangers if we relaxed and benefits to be had if we complied with an improved sense of personal responsibility.

Today, in response to the unwelcome rising numbers of infected persons and those needing hospital care I have authorized some further restrictions on the exposure and movements of the population. I trust that you will see the need for these actions and undertake to comply.

From the very onset of this pandemic, we as a nation took the approach that we will rely on a national cooperating effort to minimize and suppress the virus until it can be overcome. That approach is still valid and I ask fellow citizens to do their individual parts in order to bring us the results we desire.

I am aware that not every citizen will see it this way but what we have to guard against is allowing the circumstances of the pandemic to further destroy us as a people wanting the best for ourselves, our families, our communities and our nation.

It is in this regard that I reject any attempt to misrepresent the facts and the placing of blame on Tobago for hosting a few thousands who chose to spend their time in that part of the country with family and friends or just strangers enjoying the ambience that exists there.

It is not where you spend your time it is what you do there. For those who see political opportunities in these trying circumstances, I want to remind them that even before Easter the areas of spiking community spread were in County Caroni and County Victoria. Subsequently the third most affected zone was St George East.

The CMO data sheets today continue to confirm that the areas of accelerating increases of confirmed viral infection continue to be County Caroni, County Victoria and St George East.

To set about to separate the people of Tobago or their tourism economy for special hatred is misleading and just plain wrong. Against the data set it is unnecessary and purely divisive for politicians with nothing useful to contribute to be trying to establish that our current circumstances are as a result of a successful Easter weekend in Tobago.

The problem of reduced compliance is all over the country and should be seen as such if we are to rectify the situation and get back to a level that could see us rolling back the recent restrictions.

I ask for your individual cooperation. This and our abiding faith in God will see us through.

P1 if similar to the UK strain might spread easier indoors for sure.

so the CDC had ask ppl to wear 2 masks due to the b117 variant. might have to do the same here or get some KN95s.

of course is trouble asking ppl to wear 1 mask. the only thing that might change ppl mind is if what happen in brazil happen here where a set of young ppl end up hospitalized.

Ministry on Brazil COVID-19 variant: No evidence yet of 'seeding'

The Ministry of Health said it has not yet detected any evidence of seeding (spreading) regarding a variant sample of COVID-19, known as P1 or the Brazil variant, which was recently detected in the country.

Epidemiologist Dr Avery Hinds said contact tracing methods have not yet revealed evidence of seeding, or virus spread, to date:

“At the current time with the active contact tracing and testing of anyone who would have been determined to have been in contact, there isn’t currently any evidence of seeding and the individual in question is currently in isolation.”

Dr Hinds said they continue with contact tracing and testing of known contacts to look out for any possible cases within that circle and will update when more information is obtained.

On Monday, the Ministry said testing from a local COVID-19 sample revealed the presence of the P1 variant.

The Ministry said the sample was taken from a COVID-19 positive patient in the Nariva/Mayaro County and was sent, via the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), to the University of the West Indies (UWI) Laboratory.

The Ministry assured that all quarantine protocols remain in place to prevent the spread of the virus to the national community.

The country's borders are currently closed to international travel.

Reports indicate that the P1 variant is more contagious and has seen the hospitalisation of younger patients, with more than 50 per cent of the patients in Brazilian intensive care units in March below the age of 40.

Elderly patients with underlying conditions remain most at risk for contracting the variant, just as the original version of the virus.

CARPHA noted that a recent study conducted by AstraZeneca suggests that the vaccine will work against the Brazil COVID-19 variant.
