Received from a colleague:

Subject: SECURITY ALERT

Dear Business Colleague,

Re: Security Alert - Threat of car-jacking/physical assault

We refer to the matter at caption.

This Association sent a release on the above subject to the national media on Friday 24th October, '08.

Only two media houses reported on our release; the Trinidad Guardian Newspaper and Radio I95.

We have continued to receive reports since this last release of incidents of car-jackings and assault in the vicinities of St. James, Woodbrook & Newtown.

Because this matter has not received widespread coverage in the media and because of the seriousness of the reports , we have chosen to communicate directly with you.

1. We continue to receive reports of persons being attacked for their motor-vehicles when

a. they return to their cars,

b. while they are sitting in traffic and

c. when they attempt to enter their premises or return home.

Incidents have been reported to us at:

* Ariapita Avenue
* Carlos Street
* Patna Street
* Mooneram Street
* Woodford Street
* And around the Queen's Park Savannah

2. In all cases, the motor-vehicle has been stolen. In two recent reports, robbery of personal belongings, household effects and rape are also being reported.

3. We are attempting to meet with the Ag. Police Commissioner to discuss this issue, but in the meantime caution is advised in the operation of motor-vehicles.

* Do not attempt to enter your motor-vehicle if there is a parked car with occupants nearby.

* Do not exit your motor-vehicle to open your gate if there are persons standing nearby or if a car is parked with occupants nearby.

* Do maintain locked doors and windows at all times while in traffic including during busy daytime hours.

* Do discuss this issue with your employees, neighbours and relatives especially those who live and work in St. James, Woodbrook, Newtown and in areas around the Queen's Park Savannah.

Persons with further information on the above security threat are asked to please communicate with us at our email: domatt@mail.tt or by faxing us at Tel: 627-6761.

Please be serious about your personal safety and please be assured of our best attention in this and all other matters.

Yours faithfully,

Downtown Owners & Merchants Association,
Gregory Aboud,
President.

'PH' TAXIS

If you have no choice but to utilize ‘PH’ taxis, please consider the following:

* Try to avoid travelling with taxis/drivers which you are unfamiliar.

* Attempt to travel in groups, hopeful to the same destination, try to avoid being the last one left alone in the vehicle.

* If you are the lone female, avoid cars with all male occupants.

* If you feel uncomfortable after boarding, ask to be let off at the nearest public area, such as a shop, bar, gas station, pharmacy, etc.

* Keep your cell phone charged (power and money) and handy at all times. Keep emergency numbers programmed on your speed dial.

* Always make a mental note of the vehicle’s registration number and type/model of vehicle. You may also want to observe the driver for scars or other distinguishing marks, hairstyle/facial hair, etc. Also, pay attention to names that make have been dropped between the driver and other occupants. That information may prove to be critical later on.

* If you have to travel to an unfamiliar area to meet a friend, have the friend meet you at the taxi stand and travel back with you. Chances are they know the route and should be familiar with the taxis/drivers.

* Get in the habit of texting the Registration number of the taxi in which you are traveling, and your intended destination to someone close to you in the event that something happens. (Make sure they acknowledge receipt). From: hottgirl

68 Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.

This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this:
It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it.
It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain....
It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around.

SKY , do carsearch or can carsearch configure a system such that if hijacked , you give them the keys and when they drive off the car will shut down after a while ( giving you enought time to run to safety) ?

If they (CS) did, it would be very irresponsible of SKY to reveal that information here. If you really need that info, please use the PM option.

The elbow

If you are close enough to use it,

do!

2. Learned this from a tourist guide

in New Orleans .

If a robber asks

for your wallet and/or purse,

DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM .

Toss it away from you....

chances are

that he is more interested

in your wallet and/or purse

than you,

and he will go

for the wallet/purse.

RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown

into the trunk of a car,

kick out the back tail lights

and stick your arm out the hole

and start waving like crazy.

The driver won't see you,

but everybody else will.

This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency

to get into their cars after shopping,

eating, working, etc.,

and just sit (doing their checkbook,

or making a list, etc.

DON'T DO THIS!)

The predator

will be watching you,

and this is the perfect opportunity

for him to get in

on the passenger side,

put a gun to your head,

and tell you where to go.

AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR ,

LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

a. If someone

is in the car

with a gun

to your head

DO NOT DRIVE OFF,

repeat:

DO NOT DRIVE OFF!

Instead gun the engine

and speed into anything,

wrecking the car.

Your Air Bag will save you.

If the person is

in the back seat

they will get the worst of it .

As soon as the car crashes

bail out and run.

It is better than having them

find your body

in a remote location.

5 . A few notes about getting

into your car in a parking lot,

or parking garage:

A.) Be aware:

look around you,

look into your car,

at the passenger side floor ,

and in the back seat

B..) If you are parked next to a big van,

enter your car from the passenger door .

Most serial killers attack their victims

by pulling them into their vans

while the women are attempting

to get into their cars.

C..) Look at the car

parked on the driver's side

of your vehicle,

and the passenger side.

If a male is sitting alone

in the seat nearest your car,

you may want to walk back

into the mall, or work,

and get a guard/policeman

to walk you back out.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS

take the elevator

instead of the stairs.

(Stairwells are horrible places

to be alone

and the perfect crime spot.

This is especially true at NIGHT!)

7. If the predator has a gun

and you are not under his control,

ALWAYS RUN!

The predator will only hit you

(a running target)

4 in 100 times;

And even then,

it most likely

WILL NOT

be a vital organ.

RUN,

Preferably !

in a zig -zag pattern!

8. As women,

we are always trying

to be sympathetic:

STOP .

It may get you raped,

or killed.

Ted Bundy,

the serial killer,

was a good-looking,

well educated man,

who ALWAYS played

on the sympathies

of unsuspecting women.

He walked with a cane,

or a limp,

and often asked

"for help"

into his vehicle

or with his vehicle,

which is when he abducted

his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point:

Someone just told me

that her friend heard

a crying baby on her porch

the night before last,

and she called the police

because it was late

and she thought it was weird.

The police told her

"Whatever you do,

DO NOT

open the door."

The lady

then said that

it sounded like the baby

had crawled near a window,

and she was worried

that it would crawl

to the street

and get run over.

The policeman said,

"We already have a unit on the way,

whatever you do,

DO NOT open the door."

He told her that they think

a serial killer

has a baby's cry recorded

and uses it to coax

women out of their homes

thinking that someone

dropped off a baby

He said they have not verified it,

but have had several calls

by women saying that

they hear baby's cries

outside their doors

when they're home alone

at night.

Please pass this on and

DO NOT

open the door for a crying baby

VERY GOOD INFO HERE!!!!!

Will definitely practice these

Great initiative! I saw something on my newsfeed that in ATMs if you punch in your pin backwards, it sends out the money halfway and notifies police silently, not sure if it applies here though, can anyone confirm?

http://www.crimepreventiontips.org/self ... index.html

A bright flashlight can be used as a weapon to disorientate a bandit or attacker.

The trachea and eyes of an attacker are big weak points in the human body so try and aim for them, don't be squeamish because permanently or temporarily blinding your attacker can mean the difference between life and death!

Kicking an attacker on the knee will cause them to collapse and possibly damage their knee giving you time to run

I thought we were a prayerful society...but so far no one has suggested prayer. I know it will incite some remarks about how to deal with why bad things happen even to those who pray but this is still important for us all to remember. Always cover yourself in the Precious Blood of Jesus. Pray, not only when you are being attacked but at all times. A sticker does nothing if you do not exercise your faith. Our country needs prayer now more than ever before.

@DVSTT, perhaps someone in banking can confirm, however I do believe there is no such ATM security measure. The only one I know of is if you enter your pin incorrectly three times your card will be confiscated and it's not easy to get it back if it's not at your branch that it happens...but that's a definite way to get the card away from the would-be robbers, although you have to pray they do not retaliate violently when you do that. I'd stick with the tip that says do not go to ATMs at night (don't just "try not to" - make it a rule to not do it) especially when not in a large safe group.

@vimal_vs the crying baby story is an urban legend...according to Snopes.com but I can see how it could be a cautionary tale, after all we can't be too careful. In the days of old, it was a Guppy baby that plagued my nightmares after I read that tale at school in a book about legends like the douen and la diablesse etc.
