Rough idle from cold start

Postby Sabot » November 12th, 2008, 7:46 am

Recently on mornings the Ranger (WL 2.5T), gives a rough idle upon starting. It starts with one turn however but runs a little rough for about a minute. Anyone experienced this before or has an idea what might be the cause? Any subsequent starts are fine with normal idle etc. This does not affect acceleration or normal functionality though so kinda has me puzzled. Could it be the primer pump on its way out?

Hmmm ok. Do they have to be replaced or are these a serviceable component?

nah could be just that the engine is cold and no oil in the system.

no mention of bad starting just rough idle

Yes, the strainer was cleaned and the fuel filter changed.

I just did that for spite...

To check the glow plugs:

Get a length of electrical wire long enough to reach the battery to the fuel rail. Both of the are on the same side of the vehicle so it's not a great length.

Connect one end of the wire to the positive terminal. (To get current nah!)

With the ignition on, NOT with the engine tumbling.. well the engine could be on.. but whatever is good for you... very carefully, glide or brush the free end of the wire to the top of each glow plug.

If it sparks. It working.

Just do shock urself ;)

Easy to do once you get shock already from a car and know what to expect ;-)

Like getting shock from the distributor... Oh that hurt so much.... My arm tingled for days.

my glow plugs wukkin fine...but the van initially runs rough for about 20-30 secs. is normal for the Navs to sound like an Isuzu when starting from cold. also, she belches plenty white smoke from cold start as well.

nun to worry about

Having that same problem , Glow plugs are good , however , after driving and parking up , idles rough and cuts off , bypassed the hand pump and filter , van works perfect . changed the hand pump , same issue , think it could be the injector pump itself ?

Try a different service station could be you are getting water in the fuel tank, check the water trap on the filter for this telltale sign of water from the tank.

The thing is , it works perfect once you bypass the filter and hand pump . Very confusing
