fitted 6.5in in the front door of our ranger which is basically the same vehicle ..

i belive the same at the back if not then its 5 1/4

i strongly suggest that u dynamat the doors if u only changing out the speakers alone as this will make a whole lot of difference .. the cost is about $150 for both doors but it sounds liek u put in $500 worth of speakers in there

in my daily work van a madza b-2600 i changed the stock radio to a cheapo pioneer and 2 pioneer 6.5 and they sounded good until one evening my bro and i dynamatted the doors and up till now those same speakers amaze me .. i still have the workers believeing i hid a sub in the dash

if u in south it could be done in one evening ...

basically u remove the outer door panel and lay it over the door holes

Would this procedure also make the van a bit more sound-proof ? - meaning blocking out external noises?

yes it would help to some degree

floor and hood dampning does a far better job

some audio shops will do that for you and certain audio powersellers sell the damping mats here on tuner..

it is a DIY job as well, the deadner is something similar to flashband to seal leaks on your roof.. i have 2 layers of deadner on my entire vehicle with it, 5 doors and roof.. took me approx 3 days to complete..

one layer in strategically chosen locations can be completely in less than a day by yourself..

this is what i used.. it is also an excellent heat reflector..

you should look into doing your firewall as well.. see the MotorMat and HeatWave Pro...
