WTK: How to get a softer ride on a hilux

I have a 09 hilux and the back rides stiff w/o load. I did a little research and some ppl are saying to remove the second to last lift spring. need some advice on what is possible to do.

yeah removing one of the leaves from the leaf springs in the back will soften it up a bit

Reduce rear tyre pressure by 2-4 lbs

I'd lower the rear tyre pressures also. 27 - 29psi without load is ideal for even tyre wear and max comfort. (That's assuming you have the stock tyres on it)

When I was using my stock tyres the ride was great, the all terrain tyres I'm using now is definitely less comfortable than the stock bridgestones, doesn't bother me too much.

i am running 255/55/18 at 28 psi in the rear and 30 in front. i installed a 1" block to change the angle of the spring shackle. only did this yesterday. so i have to test it out for a while and see if it working better or not.

run lower pressure if u on 18s, i run my 18s all 24 psi when i had the surf,
you can also try to use an oil shock as the gas shocks do ride stiffer, but withstand load and beating better.....

Heh heh... i running 35psi front and 32psi rear.
But then again me is not stock size rim and tyre... and the ol datsun heavy.

But ditto on what these guys said - reduce ur air pressure first before trying anything else and forking up the ride handling and load carrying ability.

What about if i run 17's. would it make any difference? what size tires do you all recommend with the 17's?

General rule of thumb - the bigger ur rim and thinner ur sidewall, the harsher will your ride be. Like I said before, tyre pressures will have a definite effect on ride quality, all other factors being equal.

but OP is a pickup uou bought, not and SUV or Sedan, what do you expect it to ride like?

im sure its really not that bad, but in comparison to your last vehicle you find it stiffer....

learn to deal with it or spend some money and remove the leaves then compromise your vehicle dynamics and load carrying capabilities.........

Step 1
Find some 6 big bags of sand.
It must be red sand with a pale red/orange colour.. Must! The other colour sands reallly dont work for this modification.

Step 2
Put it in your tray

Step 3
Drive and enjoy the corolla-like ride.

Ppl often told me when I had my navara (thai import) that the ride quality was better than the Massy Navs ....anybody ever got this comment and i was running 22" on 40 series tires...

I run 27 in the back with my 17 and the ride is good. With 29 I use to get slight cutting in the centre so I think with no load 27 is the way to go!

I used both 265/65/17 and 275/65/17 and there was no touching and both steering and ride was ok.

Found the take off was a quite bit slower with the 275 though so i back to using the 265!
