Question: Why not ply boxes? MDF Sucks.

Postby Kasey » June 18th, 2019, 1:16 pm

Guys, I do a combination of pro-Audio and car audio. In ALL Pro-audio applications, the biggest companies, and box builders use ply (a good quality. eg. Birch). Why don't you guys do the same ESPECIALLY mids boxes.

Note Ply (NOT CONSTRUCTION PLY EH), works just as well (in my experience, and is so much more durable. MDF is so fragile IMHO. I have personally built MDF and ply boxes (same specs), did a side by side comparison, and could NOT tell the difference in sound!

Please craft sensible, logical, and useful responses (not like "it does gee rel fyaz, and song rel bess")

I know this question is for the ICE forum, but no one goes there any more. LOL.

We don't sell high quality ply like say 12 layer Baltic birch
Ply also has many voids and these days it's pretty soft

Even though, I have attained success with sub boxes in normal locally available Brazillian ply, I was more trying to gear towards those pretty mids boxes, men build with crappy, short-lifespan MDF.

Addressing the point that MDF is cheaper, FYI, I have seen BIG, expensive installs done with pure MDF. That is what baffles me.

those above already gave d answers

lack of availability of high quality materials & d price if u manage to find any

mdf has no voids & unless it gets wet i never really had any issues with it holding out , if u moving them around often well yea they will get some wear\tear

i wud like to try making a box out of melamine just for d experience

btw kasey i hear u end up with 1 or 2 of my boxes , if u still have them it shud be at least 8-10yrs old - how they holding up ? ...

Thanks for the input Rovin. I had 2 of your boxes. A dual 10" with aeroports (from the famous 4 pio tens that you had in your wagon), and a single 12" (made for an RE MT) which I sold in error LOL. The dual 10 has been in storage for the past 8 years as I bought a van 8 years ago. Its still in great condition obviously, and I am not parting with it. LOL.

The cost of a 3/4 sheet of quality ply at carpenter edge probably is not feasible compared to MDF or even regular ply
