Does anyone have pics of a yellow PO Mk 1 Escort...driven by a "Shakeer" d00d ? This car would have seen Wallers a few times back in the mid to late 70's. It's a "round light" Mk 1, but not the one above.

Forgive me, I'm not really knowledgable in old-time motorsports, other than the names I've heard my dad speak of.

My dad had bought his Mk1 Escort from him........hence the interest. I've only seen few pictures of it.....maybe someone has more from it's track days?

I agree with Mr. Gonsalves. We the interested parties have to MAKE THIS HAPPEN. I started building a mk2 escort almost 3 years ago and stopped because i realized i was wasting money due to the fact i have nowhere to race.
If we do not stand up together and come up with some NEW IDEAS , then the present generation may never get to experience what Mr. Gonsalves and his peers got to experience, and i for one am NOT SATISFIED with that.
Nothing gets done unless we do it. My generation and those after MUST have a place to exert the energy for this passionate SPORT/HOBBY.
And as MR. Gonsalves said. Nothing will come easy and NO GREAT CHANGE ever did. So yes we want a track, but how many of us are willing to go THE DISTANCE?...Talk is cheap and FREE....ACTIONS ARE PRICELESS.....
GREAT PICS B.T.W wagonrunner

Wow this thread has really turned out to be something spectacular really reminds me of my days sitting with Brian Camacho who is Andrew Cheeks Brother in law and had a really sweet Capri luckily for me he lived a few houses from where I grew up and also when I was building my First Cortina going by my buddy Vitty Furlong Kelly to buy old Parts and sitting with him for hours hearing stories of Racing he raced a Metro Mini if memory serves correct , I also had the pleasure of driving in Francis Corriea's RIP Escort "Quarter Master" Wagon I see that one of the cars you posted was Driven by a Corriea can you confirm the First name .

Also around that era one of my aunts b/f was Circuit / Go Kart racer Derrick Roach Originally from Guyana and still racing in Barbados who had a fully race prepped Lotus on the road that he took me for a few "spins" in on the streets in Woodbrook MG Man tracked down the Lotus for me sometime ago please post the info here as I am hoping someone has pics of it .

Dragist,

I clearly remember Brian's Capri... nice car in the day. The Correia who raced karts and shared the Silver-Reed Mini with Merryl See Tai is Chris, not Francis who was his brother (RIP). I raced karts for years with Derek (Roach) and still speak to him from time to time. Yes, he is still racing in Barbados, as is Simon Gillmore. If only we had a circuit...

Nice work Wagonrunner, that pic with Professor's Rustop Datsun about to go around the bottom corner behind what looks like Alec Poole's Datsun Cherry brings back memories. I am somewhere in that crowd in the background.

Alec Poole is a champion driver from Ireland who raced in very famous events like the ETCC and BTCC. There were two Datsuns like that he brought down here. They were built by Janspeed and one was fuel injected ( a very big deal in those days) the other had carbs. Dave Maharaj bought one of them. They were known as the Dutch Datsuns. Of course we all know that Dave Maharaj went on to manage a race team that won Le Mans.

This is a pic of the car competing in the 1974 ETCC:

[imgwh]Image[/imgwh]

These are the specs of the car as it ran in 1974:

Datsun 1200 coupé Janspeed Group 2
Engine Datsun 4 in line
Bore and stroke
Size 1295 cc
Cams 1 OHV
Valves per cilinder 2
Power 148 HP/8500
Details Twin Solex carburettors
Transmission Datsun 5-speed
Weight 700
Brakes f/r disc / drum
Wheels f/r
Tyres Dunlop

This is just to let you guys know the calibre of cars and drivers that have passed thru these shores in motoracing. And we had drivers down here who held their own against them.

Like all you want to leave out the man who beat British Saloon Car Champion Richard Longman, when he came to Trinidad just after celebrating his 100th win in a Mini. He is also one of the few (2?) men who rode (motorcycle) through Venezuela, Central America, up to the USA, (part of an aborted round the world trip). The other man was, Errol John 'Roonie' from Vistabella, RIP. Not many know about that.

I can remember my third time at Waller Field. I was 9 years old and my uncle told me a week before that we will be helping the organisers at the race circuit. On the day of the event I was woken up at 4.00 am. That day at the time it was dark and raining heavily. My uncle gave me a deer skin jacket and told me that I would not get wet,and I did not. At Waller Field I was put as a field marshall on the Da'Costa Bend .I got my first look at Mark Moody's Spitfire Rx2 and then Peter Moody's black & white checkered Ford Escort.Theirs were faster than any thing we had in Trinidad.Peter Moody broke the lap record by a little more than 3 sec, previous record being 45.? secs. When Frankie Boodram came around the Da'Costa Bend corner,he took it so hard that the front air dam[spoiler] broke 3/4 off when it contacted the tracks surface. I raised my yellow flag as I was instructed looked around to the other field marshalls & they raised their yellow flags. And when it was clear I ran across the track and picked up the air dam which was really light & taller than I was. At the end of the last race upon which a white formula with green 7up written on it that had shut down further up before where I was stationed.I saw them pushing and went to help but the man said "get in and steer" and I DID and was pushed all the way back to the pits. The impact that that event had on me, I believe every little boy should experience.

I have several pics of both Mark's Mazda and Peter's space-frame Escort. Here are a few:

Image
Mark Moodie's Mazda and Peter Moodie's Escort lead the field. That's me in ZMMA on opposite lock with the tail high in the air after making contact with Alec Poole's tyres. Note the crowd.

Image
This one is of Peter's March leading me, followed by the rest of the field in a Group 4 (Formula Caribbean) race.

Image
Mark Moodie leads Simon Gillmore in ZMMA during a famous battle between the two at one race meeting. Moodie won that time but a week later I drove ZMMA in Jamaica and evened the score.

Image
Mark in the fire-breating Mazda.

Image
Peter way ahead of the field in the Escort. There was no match for that machine at the time.

Image
Peter and mark lead the field in a "Formula Libre" race (note the white Terrapin single-seater).

Image
Peter leads Simon. ZMMA was built to Group 2 Class 2 regs (unlightened, modified up to 2.0 litres) but would run Group 3 races, sometimes with fibreglass doors. This pic shows the standard (heavy) doors. Peter's Escort was Group 3 to the limit!

Image
Peter leads Alec Poole into Top Corner.

Image
A closer shot of Peter's Escort.
