2010 Sx4 M16a vs SSS M16a

Postby omsin sx4 » May 18th, 2011, 11:29 am

Hi, I have a 2010 Sx4 and I am trying to document the differences between both engines. In my research I have found the following. Remember this is the New M16a that comes on the 2010+ Sx4 and not the old liana One.

I wand to find what parts of the SSS I can use to make more power on the Sx4 and the same for all the SSS owners that can use parts to make more torque.

SSS - EGR (Sx4 - No EGR)
SSS - Aluminium intake manifold (Sx4 - Plastic)
SSS - Semi Header Exhaust Manifold (Sx4 - Ugly one Piece)
SSS - Fat Size Ecu (Sx4 - Low profile Ecu Different PinOut)
SSS - Dual Coil Pack (Sx4 - Independent Coil Pack)

Power
SSS

Bore x stroke (mm) 78.0 x 83.0
variable valve timing
11.1:1 compression ratio
max power 92/125.1 kW/PS @ 6800 rpm
max torque 148/109.2 Nm/lb.ft @ 4800
redline 7200 rpm

Sx4

Bore x stroke (mm) 78.0 x 83.0
variable valve timing
10.0:1 compression ratio
max power 88/120 kW/PS @ 6,000
max torque 156/115 Nm/lb.ft @ 4,400
redline 6800 rpm

Transmission
SSS

1st 3.250
2nd 1.904
3rd 1.407
4th 1.064
5th 0.885

SX4

1st 3.545
2nd 1.904
3rd 1.310

If you have any additional info please share. I will update this if I find more info.

hmmmm...didn't notice the gear ratios before :(

cams will add about 3whp .... u think that worth pulling your engine out for?

intake manifold and exhaust manifold would be a better buy for the installed price.

and as far as i know the sx4 isn't 11:1 compression

M16a on the Sx4 is 11:1 CR... I think the internals on both SSS and Sx4 should be the same as both have the same CR.. don't know about the Head.. but since both have almost the same HP (123 vs 120) I think the internals of head and block are the same... -3 hp from the intake and exhaust manifold..

I have the Combo on the Sx4

Header
Intake
Exhaust
PiggyBack

I'll be willing to wager that the engine is exactly the same as the sport, the differences in perfromance being due to the IM , headers and ECU tuning.

If you have the same plastic IM as the M15A Swift, then there's the bulk of your HP difference right there! I've personally examined both and they are chalk and cheese in terms of relative flow.

These engines are hungry for air. Addressing that issue pays the biggest dividends... after that ECU tuning is second best.

I can't figure why the lower rev limit though. :?

I really don't think the sx4 m16a is 11:1 compression ratio...you should check that back. To my knowledge it was 9.5:1

Didn't the series 1 SSS (M/T) limit @ 6800? The series 2 went up to 7200 if memory serves.

As a side note anyways......and ditto on the compression ratio.

Ok This is from the Book

Image

Does this Means that I have CR of 10:1 and the Info on all the reviews I have found on the Internet is wrong?

I will check this at the end of the day and if this is true I am going back to the dark side idea

I had considered boosting but because of the info I have found (11:1 CR) I discarted the idea but with 10:1 I will considered it again.

I am confused on How this engine is doing almost the same Power as the SSS with a lower compression...

Is your SX4 automatic or manual? If you put it up on a dyno you'd get a better idea of the power. Auto SSS is around 95whp and manual SSS is around 105whp I believe.

Yes that means the compression ratio of your engine is 10:1 ....it would never put out as much as the sss m16a because the sss has higher compression and the tune on the SSS ecu will be more aggressive than that on the economy sx4. The sss is rated at 125bhp .....what is the sx4 rated at ?

Here's the result from a cool power calculator I use from time to time 8)

Computation Results:
Engine Horsepower (peak) is 125
Old Compression Ratio is 11.1
New Compression Ratio is 10.0
Computation Results:
Computed New Engine HP is 122, a -3 percent change

Thank you all for the info..

So what you recomend me to do to increase performance on my set up... Can I use any std part from the SSS to increase power beside the Intake manifold... I already have a header...

The header was done with the idea of ignorant ignis of using a toyota 4AG 20v header...
