Anyone ever mixed to different grades of oil made by the same manufacturer?
eg Using mobil 1.... 2 quarts 10w30 and one quart 15w40?

I have done it before in emergency situations but never intentionally..

Honestly, its not ideal but you can go ahead and do it..

absolutely nothings wrong with doing that
you just won't be at the body you have intention of running.

Chevron Delo 400 LE SAE 15W-40, $300 for 3 gallons from Big Z.

Anyone else using Castrol Magnatec 20W-50? Since I put it in the engine has been running A LOT quieter! When driving with windows down and radio off, you can barely tell if it's idling. The sound from the in-tank fuel pump and exhaust is louder.

Pretty good for the price....$197 @ Dollar Savers, most places sell it for around 230/ gallon. 10W 30 I use.

$230? Pricesmart has it for $175 :fadein:

The 10W-30 you're using is Magnatec as well? Where'd you get it? Next oil change is either 15W-40 or 10W-30 for me.

i started to use this on a b13 the magnatec 20/50 and noticed that the car sputters slightly on start ups on mornings and while accelerating.... after that it runs good as if it has to break in...also a slight engine noise...so i dont knw...usually use the normal GTX 20/50 without any problems....dont knw if this particular 20/50 is a little thinner than the normal GTX brand...

Meant to post this earlier.. Anand Low Price Supermarket by Mosquito Creek has Shell HX7 10W-40 for $199.99 and Total Quartz 9000 5W-40 for $195.99. Both 4 litre bottles. They have several other lines of Shell & Total, other brands too. Decent prices imho.
Any reviews on the Total 9000? It's a full synthetic right?

See below:

Total 9000 is a group 3 synthetic. Which means it's classed as a synthetic, but actually starts it's life as a group 2 or group 1 mineral oil. Has additives and is very highly processed to make the synthetic classification.

For most cars, that should be more than fine.

Higher priced oils like Redline are actually man made, and use only full synthetic components. They are group 4 based oils.

I know this thread is about engine oil, but what is the best gearbox oil in 75w90? I currently using redline and it is good. What are the masses using ?

NR8.. I been using that very same Total Quartz 9000 for about 2 years now on 2 vehicles and I have nothing but rave reviews.. I gave a few explanations further back, but basically the oil has a superb detergent pack which does a great job of removing sludge and deposits..
I never ran the oil to an interval of over 9000km but I am fairly certain that it would be capable of it.. If you do your research you would realise that the Total is actually quite expensive abroad, but in Trinidad all the other "big" name brands are ridiculously overpriced for what they are..

Thanks for your input, CD4Accord. I did come across your posts, after I made mine  . From the little research I did I discovered that it was a great oil.

My main concern is that I drive short trips Mon-Fri. As such, I'm presently choosing to use mineral oil and filter at a max interval of 4,800-5,000 km. I'm really liking the price and brand of the Valvoline Premium Conventional 10W-30 @ about $135/ gallon and may use that from next oil change.

However, if I start driving longer distances in a short space of time (and I may have to soon), I would definitely switch to the Total as my oil budget is $200. In that case I'd probably use the same interval you stated and a filter change in-between.

Would appreciate your thoughts on my plan.

NR8.. Sounds like a safe plan...
I usually do the TQ 9000 on about 8000-9000km which equates to about 6 months driving in the vehicles I use it for.. I don't rack up the distance that quickly.. Usually just use one Purolator PureOne, but I understand those are hard to come by in Trinidad..
I really don't see the need to run UOA's on it simply because its easier and cheaper just to play it safe and change on time.. As I said, the detergent pack is excellent and it tends to extract A LOT of sludge from your motor, so the oil will only be as good as the filter you use.. I swear by purolator and I believe you can't go wrong there..

Jusging by your driving style, the Valvoline and Total will work out to about the same cost per year in terms of oil change intervals, just a matter of if you prefer doing the oil changes more or less often.. Valvoline conventional is one of the most respected cheap oils in the states so I have no objection to it.. Where you been getting it for $135?

I used to use the Purolator Classic with my car's original engine. Since the newer engine has been installed I've only changed oil twice. First time I used a Sakura filter, simply because that's what was available at the time and I didn't know much about the engine to choose otherwise. After that I got to learn about Luberfiner and used that filter. Have you ever used this brand?

I have not personally used the Valvoline yet. I only recently became aware of their line of oils and realised the Conventional is great for the price & reviews I've read so I plan to use it from now on. Powerseller SJR Imports in Debe sells it for that price.

Luberfiner is a very good filter, as is the purolator classic..

I don't think the Sakura is worthy of any synthetic oil though so don't even consider it..

Then I think I'll continue with the Luberfiner for now because it's easier for me to get access to that than the Purolator. I've always been kinda iffy about the Sakura brand to be honest..

Thanks for all the advice man, really appreciate it.

Pentosin is an EXCELLENT quality German lubricant manufacturer.. They made a lot of the OEM fluids on my Volvo and I would trust them 100% if the price is right...
Which begs the question.. Whats the pricing like in Trinidad?

i used the tranny oil in VR4 auto tiptronic tranny cause it had bust its oil line hose to the cooler and it cost about $60qt for mitsu fluids an need 7 or 8 qts to fill back up so i just end up buying this instead of wrecking the car home. Been at least 5,000 km yeah i got lazy but seen no problems an the oil still pink/red.

The engine oils dont stay on the shelves very long at all....

I did a search for the YouTube code and title of the presentation and did not find it. So I apologise if it is a repost. An old video, but informative nonetheless.

I got tired of all the misinformation from the tribologists on this website.

I bought the Pentosin @ ERM yesterday, paid $345 for the 5L bottle 5W30.
The 5W50 and 5W40 are $300. I didn't ask about any others, but I believe that's a rough pricing for all the 5L bottles.
