High Idle Problem with Civic?

Postby EFFECTIC DESIGNS » March 12th, 2011, 1:59 pm

mechanic took apart the throttle body thingy and cleaned it out etc
He put it back in and now the car idles at 1500 RPM when in park or N

Dies down when you put in Drive or Reverse.

This never happened before. Is it a simple problem I can fix instead of carrying this back to a mechanic?

I guess I could leave it as it is, but was nice having a car that idles SILENT when its in park and you waiting on someone etc.

One thing though I will fraid to leave my car overnight by him or anyone for that matter.

I go call him and find out whats the process and if he can fix it same day.

Long shot - Did you clean out the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) in the throttle body? If it is really dirty, that may cause the car to idle really low / stall..

^ The mechanic cleaned it out.

However I edited the post since the symptoms seemed to have disappeared. Apparently the car fix magically on its own with a lil driving for a few days.

However it now has a high idle problem lol

Long time I haven't played with a Civic, but IIRC, there may be some adjustment possible with the IACV.. Try slackening the screws and turning the whole unit or something along those lines..

I remember I got idle issues after cleaning mines out and it needed some minor tweaking to sort things out. Someone else may be able to explain better..

Adjust idle screw..

let the car reach normal operating temperature

take a flat head screwdriver and insert into the slotted groove on the throttle body and turn half turn at a time

clockwise is to reduce idle rpm i think

i've never messed with a k20 but once u have an idle screw, the procedure is the same

just make sure u set the correct idle (this value is usually under the hood on a white sticker on the bonnet or u can check online for this)

Actually, if the screw is still in the factory set position, you should not interfere with it.. if you are having idle issues, it would usually mean the air passages in the throttle body is getting clogged up and needs cleaning.. playing with that screw should be a last resort..

so I was told..

Yeah I turn the screw both clockwise and anti and it did nothing.

Seems to be something else. Will have to check a mechanic.

car moving way to fast without pressing any gas. I does like to pull up handbrakes when waiting by traffic lights instead of having to continuously mash brake or put it in park.

when the idle low you don't have to pull the ebrake to hard to stop it from rolling.

adjust the idling screw or check if Ex-cable too tight "might be pulling on the throttle a little"

You need to adjust the diaphragm operated valve on the throttle body, it may have became loose.
give me a call if you need instructions.
