Mathias Beche and Pierre Thiriet claimed victory in the opening round of the European Le Mans Series at Paul Ricard for the French TDS Racing squad.

Beche and Thiriet ended up winning the six-hour race in their ORECA-Nissan 03 by more than a lap after the challenge from the Greaves Zytek wilted in the fifth hour.
Greaves driver Alex Brundle dislodged part of the front bodywork after taking over the Zytek-Nissan Z11SN and a pitlane infraction at the resulting stop resulted in a two-minute stop-go penalty. That left the car, which was started by Tom Kimber-Smith, in fourth place at the chequered flag.
The race for overall victory had initially been a three-way fight between the TDS ORECA, the Greaves Zytek and the Status GP team's brand-new Lola-Judd/BMW B12/80 driven by Yelmer Buurman, Alexander Sims and Dean Stirling.
The Status car fell out of contention when SPEED EuroSeries graduate Stirling, racing a modern LMP2 for the first time, was unable to match the times of his team-mates after taking over from Buurman in the third hour.
The Sebastien Loeb Racing ORECA-Nissan 03 driven by Nicolas Minassain, Nicolas Marroc and Stephane Sarrazin came through to finish a lap down on the winners. The car, which was only finished in the week of the race, was never in contention for the victory.
Sims brought the Status Lola back to third after the Greaves car's problems, finishing 30s down on Sarrazin at the finish.
The JMW Motorsport Ferrari squad sealed a dramatic victory in the GTE Pro class. James Walker and Jonny Cocker completed the race on four stops in their 458 Italia, whereas the JMB Ferrari that had led most of the way in the hands of Jamie Melo and Marco Frezza needed a late-race splash-and-dash.
Cocker sneaked ahead as Melo exited the pits with 11 minutes to go and was able to hold on to claim a one-second victory.
GTE Am honours went to the ProSpeed Porsche 911 GT3-RSR of Marc Goossens and Maxime Soulet.
Curtis Racing Technologies drivers Phil Keen, John Hartshorne and Alex Kapadia came out on top in the one-make LMPC category.

Romain Dumas: the 24 Hours of Nurburgring, Le Mans until ...
16/05/201212:13 - Auto News - LE MANS 24 HOURS 2012

Winner of the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps WEC at the wheel of the Audi R18 ultra, Romain Dumas discusses this week one of the main objectives of its 2012 season: the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, whose fortieth edition will be run on 19 and 20 May

After four victories (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011) in five starts, the pilot lights will focus once again the victory. As in previous entries, Romain Dumas will defend the colors of Team Manthey. It will evolve in a Porsche 997 GT3 R he will share with Marc Lieb, Lucas Luhr and Richard Lietz, all Porsche works drivers. "One of our strengths is to have a proven car," says Roman. "We all know perfectly and I have already won this race with both Mark and Lucas. In the absence of Timo (Bernhard), Richard joined us: I know him since we were teammates several times, including the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid. Finally, the experience of Team Manthey is still a formidable asset on such an ordeal. We have all the elements to do well, but will face stiff competition. Besides the many Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Aston Martin and Corvette or even McLaren and Ford are present! The top is just awesome and, as in past seasons, I expect a big fight. The challenge is great and the victory will be decided on details. It will be perfect at all levels. "

Before the 24 Hours of Le Mans (he had won in 2010 with Timo Bernhard and Mike Rockenfeller), where he will pilot an Audi R18 ultra, Romain Dumas is preparing to meet the 170 curves and 22 km from the legendary Nordschleife with undisguised pleasure: "I still remember my first laps on this track so special. At the time, I had gotten there with a road car and Timo gave me advice. I fell in love with this track and this race. Level of control is always a treat! As for the atmosphere, it is indescribable. Each turn on the Nordschleife is a challenge in itself. And I am eager to meet again ... " The free trials of the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 2012 will begin Thursday, May 17 at 14:30. Qualifications from 19:30 to 23:30 and on Fridays from 9:35 to 11:35 and from 18h to 18h50 for the Top 40. Start of the race Saturday, May 19 at 16:00. (According to press information Romain Dumas) Photo: 24 Hours of Nürburgring (Germany), Podium, June 26, 2011. The winners of the 2011 left to right: Timo Bernhard (to be replaced this year by the Austrian Richard Lietz), Lucas Luhr, Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb.

Norma and Status confirm participation
11/05/201215h44 - Auto News - 24 HEURES DU MANS 2012

The two LM P2 prototypes damaged at Spa-Francorchamps will be repaired for the Test Day 24 Hours of Le Mans on 3rd June.

Competitors of the ELMS, Status GP and Extrême Limite Aric accepted the invitation of the ACO and FIA to join the grid of the World Endurance Championship at Spa-Francorchamps. Both competitors fell victim to the legendary Eau Rouge. The condition of both Lola-Judd and Norma-Judd prototypes raised questions that they may withdraw from the Le Mans 24 hours, however both should be ready for test day.

Status GP team manager Simon Cayzer: "It's clearly disappointing for all at Status GP, our drivers, sponsors and technical partners... the most important thing is Alexander is OK, and we pay tribute to Lola for the car's integrity in the accident. We believe our Lola-Judd is a very competitive package, and we were looking forward to racing against the LMP2 competition in the FIA WEC. We accepted the invitation to compete here as part of our preparations for Le Mans. We have gained some useful data with the 500km we've done here at Spa yesterday, and we are continuing from here to optimize everything possible for Le Mans."

Jean-Luc Tertrin, communications manager of Extrême Limite Aric : "Philippe Hazebrouck escaped unhurt from the accident. It is in the Hautes-Pyrenees at Norma to be repaired. The tub is not damaged and the manufacturer has spare parts in stock. The reliability of the car is not in question: remember that the M200P finished all six races it took part in last year. At Le Mans, we have a good chance if we can benefit from the problems of others without paying the price ourselves ... That is the way at Le Mans! "

Le Mans 24 Hour - McNish puts hybrid Audi top in Le Mans test
Allan McNish topped the times for Audi at the Le Mans test day.

The Scot, driving the hybrid Audi R18 e-tron quattro, set a best time of 3m25.927s in the afternoon session of the eight-hour test. That was half a second quicker than Andre Lotterer in the second Audi hybrid, which recorded a 3m26.468s.
McNish, who again co-drives with Tom Kristensen and Rinaldo Capello, said: "The car was very good. We had some ideas after Spa [the hybrid's race debut] and Dindo and Tom took them further, and then I continued to improve the car."
McNish's Audi finished the session early after a crash at Tertre Rouge, which he stressed was his fault. He could have driven back to the pits, but with only one hour to go, the team decided not to risk damaging the car further.
Loic Duval was third fastest in the fastest of non-hybrid Audi turbodiesels. His R18 ultra was only a tenth slower than Lotterer on a 3m26.561s.
Alex Wurz set the best Toyota time of the test during the afternoon. He was only seven tenths behind the third-place Audi.
The fastest time set by a privateer LMP1 car was Danny Watts' morning best in the Strakka Racing HPD ARX-03a. His 3m34.243s was more than second faster than Andrea Belicchi's time in the fastest of the Rebellion Racing Lola-Toyota B12/60s.
Olivier Pla was fastest in LMP2 in both sessions aboard the OAK Racing Morgan-Nissan 2012 LMP2. The Frenchman tested this car, as well as the Judd/BMW-powered version that he will drive in the race, in the absence of Bas Leinders and Maxime Martin.
Luxury Racing Ferrari driver Frederic Makowiecki's time of 3m58.869s from the morning session stood as the best time in GTE Pro. Oliver Gavin was only just over a tenth behind in the afternoon aboard the best of the Corvette C6.Rs.
Allan Simonsen was fastest in GTE Am aboard the factory-entered Aston Martin Vantage GTE.

Gene replaces Bernhard

Marc Gene will replace Timo Bernhard and Le Mans 24 hours this year.

Bernhard has taken part in the last three events but is focusing on making a complete recovery after an accident in testing in March.
Audi reserve Gene will now take his place.
"I’m very pleased with the steps I’ve managed to make during this time," said Bernhard. "We’ve created a tight system of medical checks, so my progress has constantly been monitored.
"Unfortunately, there’s not enough time before the Le Mans 24 Hours to become 100 per cent fit again. Le Mans is a world-class race that doesn’t allow any compromises.
"I only want to compete at this event in perfect physical condition. That’s why on the advice of my doctors and in close coordination with Audi I decided not to run at Le Mans this year."

Audi on pole for Le Mans 24 Hours
Germany's Andre Lotterer put defending champions Audi on pole for the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race for the second year in a row in a first for a hybrid car.

Lotterer, who won the event last year with Switzerland's Marcel Faessler and France's Benoit Treluyer in the number two diesel Audi, put in a best lap of three minutes 23.787 seconds in the number one R18 e-tron car.
"I did not get all the perfect sectors together, but I think we can still be happy," said Lotterer.
Audi also took second place in qualifying for the 80th edition of the race at the high speed Sarthe track with the R18-ultra driven by French duo Romain Dumas and Loic Duval as well as Spaniard Marc Gene.
Toyota qualified third on their return to Le Mans after a 13-year absence with Britain's Anthony Davidson at the wheel of their petrol hybrid for the final quick lap in dry and warm conditions.
Denmark's eight-times Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen will be fourth on the grid in the number two Audi e-tron he shares with Britain's Allan McNish and Italian Rinaldo Capello.
Another former F1 driver, Karun Chandhok, was on course to become the first Indian to start the race after the JRM Honda qualified 11th with Australian David Brabham and Scotland's Peter Dumbreck.
The team had a difficult day, however, after damaging the gearbox on Wednesday.
"Yesterday I hit some debris through Tertre Rouge and the car felt like it took off. We didn't know until we checked thoroughly overnight but the impact of coming back to ground cracked the gearbox," said Chandhok.
"The team then decided to change the engine, which was pretty logical considering we were changing tomorrow anyway.
Although I would have liked to drive tonight, I'm just looking forward to getting behind the wheel at my first Le Mans on Saturday."Qualifying results:

Audi on pole for Le Mans 24 Hours
Germany's Andre Lotterer put defending champions Audi on pole for the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race for the second year in a row in a first for a hybrid car.

Audi retain Le Mans title
Audi defended their Le Mans 24 Hours endurance title on Sunday with Germany's Andre Lotterer taking the chequered flag for the second year in a row in a first victory for a hybrid car.

The dominant German manufacturer swept the podium in their 11th win in the last 13 years at the Sarthe circuit. They won last year with a diesel engine.
"It's really superb as when you come here for the first time you don't know how the technology will work out," Audi motorsport head Wolfgang Ullrich told reporters after the 80th edition of the race.
The number one diesel-hybrid R18 - shared by Lotterer, France's Benoit Treluyer and Switzerland's Marcel Faessler - led for most of the race and denied Denmark's Tom Kristensen a ninth win in the number two Audi.
"We arrived better prepared and as we won last year it gave us confidence," said Treluyer. "We kept the same driver line-up and to be on the hybrid project motivated us even more."
Germany's Mike Rockenfeller, a winner for Audi in 2010, wrapped up the 1-2-3 when he crossed the line in third place in a non-hybrid car.

Chandhok first Indian to finish Le Mans
Karun Chandhok celebrated an Indian first after finishing the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race in sixth with his JRM team-mates David Brabham and Peter Dumbreck.

The first Indian to compete in and complete the race, Chandhok had taken his first stint at the wheel with only a few laps of Le Mans under his belt after the team had problems in qualifying with the Honda HPD car.
"Driving for nine of the last 36 hours and sleeping for four makes for a pretty tiring ratio," said the ex-Formula One driver after multiple stints at the wheel through the night and day.
"I ended up doing the graveyard shift from 2 to 5 a.m. which was very special and exhausting in equal measure. It made me really understand the unique, special nature of this race."
Indian Narain Karthikeyan would have been his country's first Le Mans racer after qualifying in 2009 but he hurt his shoulder before the start and did not take part.
