What's the best way to remove a rounded off wheel nut?

Postby Leon » May 16th, 2012, 10:37 pm

I did some googling and I realised that there is a socket that is supposed to be able to do it.
Apart from that - hammer and a chisel.
Failing which - a cutting torch.

Any ideas? Or can you recommend someone that will do it?

Not sure if this is the best place for this Mods.

cut a notch into it with a dremel, then use a cold chisel and hammer.............simple and very effective
depending on the size, Craftsman has bolt removers which are quite expensive, but are somewhat bulky and won't always fit in a bolt hole recess

Well, i've seem my dad use this method for allot of rounded off Nuts....
He would use a size smaller socket(if d /nut/whatever is 13mm, he will use 12mm)
and he'd get a hammer and with a few good taps( 3-4)
he would force it on the nut and just he just screw it out.
ive seen this... like a million x lol

If you have access to a gator grip... try it... but the head is normally too big to fit into most wheels (Particularly aftermarket and tuner wheels.

Otherwise, this method is the normal answer:

as rmlmv said, take it to a muffler shop. They will use the tig, no damage to your stud. if you from south there is a shop near southern sales. Is about 30 dollars to do it i think .

did this many times as well, a hex type socket is usually the best type to use.

had this problem recently......got it out by madman Chungs in Couva (north of KFC) opposite Stay Cool

what he did was welded a handle to the nut and turned it until it came out.

Don't worry about damaging the stud. It is only like about 20 bucks for a new one.

i had to weld onto the nut. I protected the rim from sparks by cutting a small hole in a towel, soak the towel and cover the rim with the hole giving access.

sounds like u over-tightening them...........most people don't realize you're supposed to tighten wheel nuts to a specific torque
