School killing a reflection of society, says TTUTA
Death of Renaldo Dixon

By Sue-Ann Wayow sue-ann.wayow@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: May 28, 2013 at 10:00 PM ECT

THE stabbing death of Renaldo Dixon at his school on Monday is reflective of the violent culture this country has developed, according to Peter Wilson, general secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA).
Dixon, 14, was stabbed four times by his schoolmate at Waterloo Secondary School in Carapichaima. The suspect is a 16-year-old pupil who skipped his Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) exam to prepare and carry out the killing with a kitchen knife.
Wilson told the Express: “We have been pointing out all along that students are part of the society. We have unfortunately developed a culture of violence in the society and that, of course, is being reflected by the students.
“The students come from communities where they are exposed to violent behaviour, incidents of crime and the use of violence. Children grow up in this type of culture and therefore reflect that kind of behaviour. It is a problem for the whole society to deal with.”
Wilson said, in the past, TTUTA made several recommendations to the Education Ministry.
“A number of recommendations have not been implemented in a consistent fashion and the Ministry needs to devote more resources in terms of implementing those recommendations.”
Wilson said the killing should be a “wake-up call” for the Ministry to implement “hard and soft measures”.
Hard measures, he said, referred to beefed-up security and police patrols and soft measures would include proper training and counselling programmes.
“Priority must be given to ensure an incident like this does not occur again,” he said.
Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh blamed the “failed family support system” for Dixon’s death.
Gopeesingh said: “We want the parents to take some responsibility of their children’s behaviour. They must take charge as well to prevent their children from getting involved in those types of fights. Look after your children. Instil in them a proper sense of values and self-worth and self-esteem and encourage them not to go down a path of dysfunctional behaviour.”
He also said people in communities need to intervene “if they see abnormal student behaviour on the streets”

..Girl in middle reports threats

The schoolgirl who was the romantic interest of both Renaldo Dixon and the boy who allegedly stabbed him to death reported yesterday that she was being threatened.
The girl told school officials that she was warned to stay away from classes, because she was responsible for Dixon’s death.
The threats were allegedly made by friends of the victim and suspect, the Express was told.
A school official told the Express “the girl said she was being threatened by the boys’ friends. The pupils telling her that they will beat her because she responsible for Renaldo’s death and the arrest of the other boy. She is scared that they will attack her. She was crying”.
The school has also been informed of a Facebook profile created in memory of Dixon, on which photographs of Dixon, the girl, and the 16-year-old suspect have been posted, and where derogatory statements have been made.
Dixon’s mother, Camille Taitt, said she was planning a memorable service for her second-born. The mother of four described her son as a loving, quiet boy.

Gopeesingh: No return of licks in schools
By Carolyn Kissoon
Story Created: May 28, 2013 at 9:58 PM ECT
Story Updated: May 28, 2013 at 10:43 PM ECT
Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh said yesterday that the return of corporal punishment was not being considered as a solution to violent crime in schools.
He said, however, that discussions were ongoing for the implementation of walk-through metal and weapon detection scanners at high-risk schools.
Gopeesingh was speaking to the media following a meeting with principal and staff at Waterloo Secondary School, where a 14-year-old pupil was stabbed to death by a schoolmate on Monday.
Renaldo Dixon was stabbed four times and died at Freeport Health Centre.
A 16-year-old Form Five pupil is in police custody.
Gopeesingh was accompanied by Couva North MP Ramona Ramdial and several local government councillors. Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) second vice-president Orville Carrington also visited the school.
Gopeesingh said Waterloo Secondary School was not among the 36 high-risk schools.
“In fact, Waterloo (Secondary) got three additional scholarships (last year) and it is one of the three Government secondary schools that is performing so well. This (death) came as a shock to the student population, the teaching population and the Ministry of Education. If you do scanning for every student and pass them through scanners, what mindset are you creating in our students?” he said.
Dixon’s mother, Camille Taitt, had appealed for the return of corporal punishment in schools on Monday. She also suggested walk-through metal scanners.
Gopeesingh said the principal, teachers and pupils were saddened by the incident.
“I feel the pain as a Minister...I am sure the country feels the pain for a young child. Many parents will ask on a daily basis, ‘when I send my child to school what will happen to my child’ and this is the responsibility of the Minister. To ensure that students are taken care off in the schools and I intend to continue to work as hard as possible to ensure parents that our children are protected and taken care of.”
Gopeesingh said he was unhappy and dissatisfied with what was happening in the nation’s schools. He said in recent years 2,200 pupils were suspended, with 700 suspended for more than seven days.
He said centres were being established to provide counselling to parents and pupils before re-entering the school system.
Gopeesingh said there was no need for police officers to be stationed at schools.
He said a committee was being established to deal with abnormal and deviant behaviour among pupils.
“This is why Cabinet recently passed a note to have more than 500 guidance officers in schools.
Gopeesingh said he extended condolences to Dixon’s mother in a telephone conversation on Monday night.
He said counselling would be provided to the teenager’s family, teachers and friends.
Ramdial said the Minister has called an urgent meeting with all principals and schools supervisors in the Central district.
She said financial support was offered to the victim’s family for funeral arrangements.
“We are all working closely together to ensure that this event is not repeated in any way. Not only in Central, but otherwise,” she said.

The moms called the Ministry of Education informed them that her daughter is traumatized and had the audacity to ask for a transfer to Holy Faith Convent, Couva. She is going to be transferred to a school deep south.

Okay> So they remove corporal punishment from schools because it "violent" but blaming society for the violence that children exposed to. If there were serious consequences for deviant behaviour in schools, students would think twice before doing mischief.

edit
-no cutting of hair until married
-no coloring of hair until married
-if a moustache appears which would affect aesthetics, it will be permissible to remove it once a year
-eyebrows can be shaped/trimmed/tapered, only by the child's mother once a year
-no makeup until married
-no shaving of legs necessary as only clothing covering the ankle can be worn, stockings are recommended but optional
-no fitted or tight clothing
-no armless/strapless clothing
-no short pants at all, never, not even at home
-no low cut clothing exposing cleavage, tshirts and polos are recommended
-during free time/weekends/holidays once all homework is complete, child will be allowed to learn to cook, clean, bake and perform other household chores as deemed necessary
-no shoes exposing the toes
-slippers exposing the toes can be worn at home only, but must be removed when visitors arrive for more suitable attire
-no heels greater than 2"
-no nailpolish
-only light scented perfume is allowed for special occassions like weddings, prayers and other family gatherings
-child shall never ask to drive, or have aspirations/wishes of ever driving an automobile, transporation will be provided upon reasonable request
-a strict regime of the application of coconut oil to the hair shall be followed
-marriage can only take place with the proper consultation and permission of the father or most senior male in the family
-husband-to-be has to sign a binding agreement pledging allegiance and loyalty to the father or most senior male in the family

If these things are followed, we will not as a society have problems with females getting out of line and having to resort to slothing.
