Vehicle Transfer

Postby Michelle50 » August 8th, 2013, 8:26 pm

Can anyone tell me what is the penalty/fee for not transferring a vehicle within the 7 day period? Presently the vehicle needs a carburetor.

If the original owner has provided me with copies of his ID and DP (back and front) as well as a copy of his certified copy, does he still have to present for the transfer?

If the original owner cannot be present for the transfer, what do I do?

Thanks for the help

There is a 200 fine for not transfering within the 7 days

The vendor and the purchaser both need to be present at lisc office to present their both forms of ID to the counter clerk

Why cant the vendor be present for the transfer??

Thanks for the reply.

The person that the vehicle was actually bought from is not the original owner. She bought the vehicle from the original owner but never transferred it in her name. She provided the copies of the ID, DP and certified copy of the original owner.

Now that I have found out about the original owner having to be present, I have tried to contact her to get the contact number for the original owner. However she seems to have gone AWOL!

Yeah...
Well u put ur selfin a bad spot dey...

U supposed to have a receipt from the owner whose name is on the certified copy
Then the signiture on the receipt needs to be verified by the counter clerk for the transfer to proceed. Hence the need for 2 forms of id anf the presence of both the buyer and seller.
So technically u cant transfer, as all u have is a proof of purchase from someone who is not the registered owner.

Try to track down the person whose name is on the certified copy and have them sign and receipt for the sale.

The person who sold you the car is responsible for tracking down the registered owner.
You should ask them for your money back until they can get the car transferred.
If the registered owner decides to issue a receipt in your name don't put the date until you are in license office so you would not have to pay a penalty.
The same for the transfer form, use the date you are transfering on the form in both places.

you would not be able to tranfer the vehicle without the actual owner being present, and you would not have to pay any penalty once the present owner is there, just make out a receipt on that day.

yea tuner while we on the topic of transfer. i sold a friend a vehicle and he in turn sold it without informing me. then the person who he sold it to got into an accident and now me and d driver in court because i was still d registered owner. All this to say when buying and selling do things properly and avoid d headache later on .

If u take a copy of the receipt from the 1st guy you sold the car to and write a letter to the transport commissioner explaining the situation, you can be absolved from the matter. But you would have to had done this when u realised the vehicle was sold to someone else, Because the insurance company was not supposed to issue any insurance without a true certified copy and a receipt and copies of id and dp from the registered owner.
Therefore you cannot be responsible for anything that happened to the vehicle.

Its worth a try..
Especially since u are not at fault

I never understand this!

I see men duz be goin by sheron and beggin for signature on a transfer form.... and a rwceipt from the registered owner... :-? :-?
Only to eventually figure out they cant find the registered owner....
So they up in a $hit street....

I fed up see and hear ppl going thru this $hit...
Including myself...
I always advise them to go about things the CORRECT way, to prevent things like these,
I have also lost prosective sales in the past due to 'pending' transfers....

In the end....buying a car is not like buying groceries....u cant walk in the grocery, take up wat u want and pay for it and thats the end of that...

U need to scrutinize and make good choices..
And maybe give up some that seem not worthwhile...

As we discussing this, Any documents needed for the previous owner to cancel his insurance on a car he sold? I recently transferred mine in june but I still have to cancel the insurance due later this year.

Just go by de ins. company and tell dem u sell de car. They will cancel de policy and u may get a rebate depending on how much time u have left. Or it may be transferred to another vehicle if u buy another one.
