Swift gti wiring issues/ timing advance.

Postby SuzukiMan365 » June 10th, 2014, 1:21 pm

Can someone tell me what these wires/sensors are? Is this timing too far advanced? see pics.

Re timing and first pic, you have to look at the top of the distributor housing ....there are two arrow marks cast into either side. At stock timing, they line up perfectly. If you do advance, don't go more than a mm or two apart (in the absence of a timing light).

The brown clip on the sensor under the thermostat is the coolant temp switch for the cooling fan. The other brown clip i think is some spare as I believe my harness has that also.

Thanks man. Does advancing the timing change the power band?

Well, yes and no. Ignition advance gives better acceleration throughout the powerband, but must be supported by good fueling. The car will feel more powerful, yes, but it will not make more top end power. It's not the same as camshaft/mechanical timing, if that's what you're asking though.

Thanks for the info. One more question....Whats the sensor just above the oil filter? Oxygen sensor maybe? it doesnt appear to be in the exhaust stream. Concerning the timing advance, the arrows dont quite line up, it about a mm advance already. (toward the rear of the car im asuming) No problem with fueling as it has a new walbro high pressure fuel pump. I just cant figure out why the fuel cut comes in at 6500 rpm.

katastrophic is correct...its the oil pressure sensor...not connected to your ecu..entirely mechanical, but nevertheless important (in a bad way). If disconnected, your oil pressure light in the dash should illuminate. If connected, it will illuminate if your oil pressure goes below 7psi, which if it does (even on idle) spells trouble for your bearings etc.

As to the 6500 rpm fuel cut...I have no idea. Maybe your injectors need cleaning??? lol You should ask those guys (technicians) at the local suzuki dealership to chime in.

Thanks for the info on oil pressure sensor. Concerning the injectors, no injector flush only a bottle of injector cleaner. The local dealership does not have a service department. The parts department doesnt even have parts. (i dont even think those guys that work there now even know what the engine looks like! lol) First order of business now is to fix oil leaks. The oil pan gasket is one leak. Do you guys suggest replacing it (not sure if i can find one) or using RTV silicone gasket maker? Waiting for replies.

ok cool. Can i use the rtv on other engine seals? In other news...........I ran into a friend today whose fixing up his gti. Bodywork need alot of work, need a new windshield etc. He says hes got a g13 head on a G16 block. What are the advantages/disadvantages of this setup? (more torque but less revs maybe?) When he's all done i hope to compare our cars performance on the track.

G13 head with G16 bottom good if you going boost, other than that, no major advantage. As a matter of fact, compression will be lower so some performance loss should be expected.

Alrite cool. Can the rtv silicone be used for other seals? And since my friend looking for a windshield, will the windsheild from a swift gs fit?

afaik the front parts are the same, up to the fenders and the windshield. RTV can be used on all seals (except the exhaust manifold), once you not going turbo.

Thanks for the info. Question: is it possible for rev-counter to "slip"? Ive noticed it once or twice now...say im in 2nd gear then i slowly press the pedal to the floor, at 5000rpm the needle drops down slightly (sound of revs continues to climb) then the fuel cut comes in at around 6500rpm. is this possible or was i too sleepy on the drive home.... :?

How much is "drops down slightly"?

500 rpm i think. Distributor seal and oilpan seal fixed today. Mechanic says it needs gearbox seal(s) where the shaft enters the gearbox. What do these look like? Where to buy? pics if any.

the wind shield from the swift gs will fit, but the wind shield from the gl or glx (4 door version) won't.. the gs and gti share the same body parts, more or less.. interior parts like door panel may be different due to power and non powered windows..

gearbox input shaft oil seal part number 24151-73B01... its just a regular radial oil seal.. google says that the size is 20*35*5.5

gearbox output shaft right hand side part number 27431-73B20 size is 35*52*8

gearbox output shaft left hand side part number 29283-35037 size is 35*62*9.5

you should be able to get these at any place that sells bearings

you can also see if you can get the seals with the double lip which acts as a dust seal..

measurements are in millimetres..

Thanks alot man!! Went for a spirited drive last night....and this is what i saw this morning  What could have caused this damage?? The car still starts up without problems, I put some electrical tape around the distributor to seal the hole.... but a new distributor is now on my list of things to get....Any thoughts guys?

you just need to get a new cap and rotor... for the while you can seal it off with silicone or steel epoxy..

yup it the same rtv you would use for the seals... its a temporary fix..

but I think that steel epoxy or plastic epoxy would be a better fix.. but still a temp fix..

the lil conductor thingy that's hanging there.. Is it loose??

no.. the swift gs has the SOHC engine.. If my memory serves me correct.. the distributors are different.. can you post a few pics of your distributor?...

you should also be able to get the rotor and cap online..

Well i patched the hole....not pretty but it works. Mechanic who changed seals used honda parts. Took it for a drive today and reved to near 7000rpm. Still be needing replacement though. Here are some pics.

cool... that should hold out for the while...

I've heard that a distributor cap from a mazda 323 (not sure which model or year) works as a replacement.. Maybe you can look into that...

Thanks for the info. This week been having trouble starting the car, battery issues i think. The other day a bus cut me off at the traffic lights and i stalled out. When trying to start there wasnt enough power to turn over the engine. Thankfully a man helped me out by pushing so i could jump-start it in reverse. Was doing low speed driving all day (less than 2500 rpm) I wonder if my alternator giving problems. Needless to say i gunned it all the way home. Got home, shut car off, started again no problems. Any thoughts?

Another question. How restrictive is the gti's factory airbox and snorkel? Today im performing an experiment where ill take off the front of the airbox and use some duct tape to keep the drop-in k&n filter in place. Taking it for a drive tonight. What you guys think?
