Beta Homes provided all counter tops as well. They offer solid surface, granite as well as and imitation laminate that looks like granite. Just call and ask for Mahase Singh. They also show you what you kitchen would look like in 3D with 3D Home Architect.

hey guys...do you guys know about using apple matt for kitchen cabinets? A wood work guy came to give me a quote and suggested I use this because I want to stain it dark/black.

i think someone told me that appamat is the wood from poui trees

Handroanthus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Bignoniaceae.[1] It consists of 30 species of trees, known in Latin America by the common names poui, pau d'arco, or ipê.

I just finished building my home (June 2014). I visited almost every kitchen place in Trinidad along with a lot of folks who built kitchen cabinets and I must say that I wasn't impressed with what anyone had to offer me so this is what I did:

1. Built my kitchen in 3D on IKEA
2. Bought a plane ticket to Florida
3. Visited IKEA Sunrise in Fort Lauderdale
4. Had a kitchen pro at IKEA fine tune the design and what I needed for my kitchen
5. Bought the kitchen (in pieces of course).
6. Shipped it to Trinidad
7. Assembled it myself.

Points to consider:
My kitchen is 18 x 14
I got: Double oven cabinets, Pantry (with pull out drawers) , Island with sink Cabinet above the fridge, Cabinets with glass, 4 horizontal cabinets with glass, all doors and drawers soft close, spice arrangers, cutlery arrangers...the full works for the kitchen all for the cost of $3820USD.

That cost me a lot less including the plane ticket and hotel accommodation if a local builder or supplier were doing everything on that list (most of them quoted me over 80K TTD).

My advice to you is do your research and buy/build your kitchen. And yes, IKEA makes top quality stuff cause everyone who enters my home is amazed at how it looks and the quality if the workmanship. They're all shocked when I tell them that I did it myself (along with a friend).

It will cost you more in wood alone than flying and importing an IKEA kitchen

However, the mill insists that when slowly and properly air dried, the wood will remain stable and exhibit minimal checking. Appearantly, the sell quite a bit into Europe. In terms of strength, it appears to rate as high as Ipe on the Janka Hardness tests. We will be testing our samples for another year or two before we decide to offer it. "

Sim simmer, I am also looking to get some custom made kitchen cupboards, I would also entertain the idea of having it shipped from florida, I will not have it done locally because of unreliable people and crazy quotes....

Wish I looked at this thread a little earlier. I'm stuck with a guy doing some cupboards for me and this man dragging the job. It's currently three weeks overdue and half of that is because his workers keep making a mess of the job and they have to keep doing over things. Feeling to drop this guy and hire someone else to finish the job.

As a person getting into woodworking myself...I can safely say..

1. Yes people are unreliable and quick to do shortcut work.
2. Woodworking is a labour intensive job as well as a lot of money to invest in proper tools etc...soo.it will be costly labourwise..unles u get a cheap dude doin a quick knock up..what u pay for is what you get.
3. I opt to build my own cabinets because I know the quality of work I will put down for myself, and I wat I want for myself qualitywise I will also do for others..I have invested heavily into this field because I like it..and when the time comes to build my own kitchen I kno I will be capable of doing a professional job myself.

With modern 32mm assembly type of cabinets (likey what IKEA uses)... it is much easier to buy off the shelf cabinets with minimal custom sizing or spacers to get a nice finished look. Many cabinet builders shy away from the euro 32mm system due to the complexity of building older american type framed cabinets to keep work 'complicated' enough to keep clients quiet.

Leveling the cabinetry is of utmost importance when installing and a semi skilled DIYer can do it on their own... countertops can be another story. I always say go to a specialist.

The problem with most kitchens these days is the design of it, which most people take for granted as being the cabinet supplier or builder's job, which is not the best idea. Have an idea of what you want before jumping into a project, otherwise it can take on a life (and timeline) of it's own. Although cabinetry can be mass produced these days, every kitchen is still a 'custom' job since every space is differently sized and offer different challenges such as columns, electrical, floor transitions, existing architectural pieces... Planning and patience is key to not get frustrated enough to throw things.

As a side note, be very careful when buying solid wood in Trinidad as much of our local woods, particularly teak, ends up on the market via pirate ventures... rushing the reaping and drying process. Solid wood needs to be kiln dried to specific humidity levels to ensure proper cell collapse so the wood won't split and crack a few months after installation. Many cabinet makers don't even know the specific humidity of woods they buy (even though the gauges are available).

Most kitchens are re-done every 10 years now due to changing trends...whereas our parents kitchens were around for 2 decades before changing out. Needs change as do family size and functionality...so solid wood cabinets, once considered the prime material, has given way to more environmentally friendly plys and engineered woods like mdf.... which offer better sustainable initiatives and make it more cost friendly over the long run... particularly if you choose to swap out the look or layout in a few years.

I will take a picture of the cabinets and upload it. No one can tell me that IKEA has inferior stuff or their kitchens are worse than anyone else's. I even have corner carousels (x2). The price of my kitchen in terms of function to build here would cost you over 85K....FACT!

very nicely put together and colour contrast.
not to take anything away from them but it is not really anything technically different
from what a "regular skilled" guy supposed to be able to do
but of course the bad work ethics overrides all of that.

$85k sounding like a real ripoff, a good average kitchen rule of thumb
should start at around $600/sq ft and $1000 should get you almost anything within reason.

Recent Job:
Materials Came up to around $16,000
Labour was around $10,000
It was custom built starting with the concrete structure, then plumbing, then tiling, then cupboard doors.
Around 30' worth of kitchen counters/doors
We build for those people with low budgets in mind. This does not mean that the quality of work is in any way compromised however.

We do everything so feel free to call if you have something elsse in mind as well. 280-6886

I should clarify that the sq ft quoted is for cabinet counter size, not area of entire kitchen.

Nice, works out to approx $500/sq ft for 60sq feet of cabinetry.
Pretty reasonable as tiles were used versus a stone countertop.

One thing your build was a complete skeleton build as opposed to units which are slapped together which makes it more expensive.
