WTK Subaru Impreza ts info

Postby nareshseep » May 12th, 2015, 9:26 pm

I am considering getting a manual subaru 2009 ts foreign used, not seeing any other worthy upgrade.
Doing some research and I have seen that all subarus engines are swappable. In the future I may swap the el15 out for a n/a ej20 or ej20t detuned/remapped. How feasible is this?

Pretty standard once you get the harness, ecu, etc.
Ensure you also get the diff/ correct ratios to match the tranny or gearbox

On Scoobytnt.com there are actually quite a few threads on what you will need for a swap.

the TS gearbox can be used back with a turbo engine, i recommend a gc8 engine, its pretty easy to swap into a ts vs a later model.

on the later models there's something with the key i believe that is needed to get the swap properly functional.

Yes both manual and auto for the 1.6 aren't really that strong

nobody is mentioning cost. a 'cheap' build might cost about 16k not including labour, wiring, fluids. proceed accordingly

^^ agreed with KiD ....

I would never tell anyone buy a TS and convert it...just sell the TS when you ready to upgrade and buy a WRX or a STi ....

I would never tell anyone use a TS gearbox though, that would not be a wise thing to do...why would you want to use a 1.6L N/A gearbox on a engine that obviously produces ALOT more power than a 1.6L

Also why swap an old engine into a new car? If you're doing it, i'd see go no earlier than 2004/6 engine .... but once again like KiD said, no one is mentioning the additional cost....

You can do it for "small money" but if you wanna do it properly, it makes more sense selling and buying it original... that or buy an entire front half WRX / STi of your car and swap every single thing.

Ok I understand your points on cost. Once it is bolt for bolt I can handle that. Wiring should be no problem once service manual and diagrams are available.

Structurally are there any major differences between the ts chassis and the wrx/sti chassis.

Thanks guys for the feedback.

yes the sti has additional plates and welds compared to the ts, thus making it heavier and more rigid than the ts. Usually though most persons just swap straight without structural mods. in such a case if you wish to, id suggest a good high quality roll cage.

Naresh, I'd suggest starting with a WRX as a starting point if that's your goal. It's a good price point between the TS and STI and has plenty power to keep you happy.

The costs can really add up over time and the results won't be the same.

I agree. I went with a Wrx and sometimes I wish I bought a STi instead (this is just for comparison). And that's solely on the transmission and brakes.

If you want a Wrx then I think you should try to go that way from the onset.

If you want it for other reasons (diy project etc), then that's a different story.

Simply put if you have the money BUY a sti...if u dont have the money buy a WRX...if you get the money when u a WRX, sell the WRX and put the rest of money you saved towards buying a STi.... buy and drive always beats DIY and beating up with a simple issue u MAY get
