What makes "music" batteries better?

Postby brakefluid » September 26th, 2015, 12:17 am

So the batteries that lots of music stores sell, what makes them better than a "normal" ac delco battery?

Is it that they:
1 charge faster/better?
2 delivers more current to the amp? If so wouldnt it drain faster?
3 has a greater storage capacity?

One of the brands that comes to mind is the optima but of course optima is not the centre focus.

Can some prices also be discussed just to give an idea of the overall differences to normal batteries?

Optima's are about ~ 1450 each, can't recall the retail on a bosch or ac delco

a 'Music' battery is usually sealed so it can be used in the cabin. Unlike a normal lead-acid battery that produces some gas that you dont wanna be breathing.

I think in iasca rulebook they say you still have to put it in an enclosure and vent it to outside, even if it sealed.

Dais all I know

Yellow top Optima batteries are Deep Cycle batteries. Has to do with the way the battery discharges the current

Deep cycle meaning they could drain down a lot relatively safe and charge back up without damage to the battery?

Yeah, of course you shouldn't fully drain a battery

They could drain a bit lower and last a lot longer .
N
But the lower u drop the voltage, the more of the lifespan u use up.

How long do these batteries usually last. Normal batteries give 2-3 years. I was told these dry batteries can last up to 7 years

Do engine temperatures ruin these batteries?

Temp do affect batteries. As I said its in a Diesel engine bay with no problems. And 5 years is a long time for batteries these days

There's purpose built batteries . Some for starting. Some for deep cycle ect.
For music so far. The optimas are very well built. Never had any problems. Could work properly in front for both starting and music application.
Fuzz sells some good batteries too

Some Benefits of XS Power AGM Batteries over conventional/ regular Lead Acid Batteries or other Brands inculding optima, Stinger include

AGM Design

Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Batteries completely eliminate the hassles of conventional battery maintenance. There is no liquid acid in AGM batteries. All of the acid is absorbed into the compressed glass matting in the cells. They are completely Non-Spillable, so they can be shipped by mail or courier service with no hazardous warnings or extract fees. Likewise, they can be mounted in any position for special application.

Totally Sealed Design

The perfectly sealed design of the XS Power AGM Batteries allows safe, maintenance free operation, allowing them to be used in nearly any position without sacrificing life expectancy or performance. This means there is no need to constantly check and refill the electrolyte and no more corroded terminals to clean!

-10 Year Design Life:

Built to last, XS Power Batteries have the ability to stand the test of time. Engineered to provide 10+ years of float service and to endure more than 1000 discharge/recharge cycles depending on the average depth of discharge.

- 3 Year Full Replacement Warranty ( No Other Battery locally offer this type of warranty)

-Sealed Design:

The perfectly sealed design of the XS Power AGM Batteries allows safe, maintenance free operation, allowing them to be used in nearly any position without sacrificing life expectancy or performance. This means there is no need to constantly check and refill the electrolyte and no more corroded terminals to clean!

- 99.99% Virgin Lead-

XS Power batteries are manufactured using only virgin lead, 99.99% pure compared to most batteries that use recycled lead. The pure-lead design means better performance. In other words, MORE POWER!

Grids are thinner.

This allows for more grids which means more surface area in a smaller package. More surface area means MORE POWER!
AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) design means longer life, vibration resistant, deep cycle and can be mounted in any position (except upside down).

Ultra Low Internal Resistance:

XS Power batteries design allows for extreme amounts of discharge current, as well as super fast recovery and recharge rates. XS Power batteries are ideal when you want to add that extra boost for your stereo without having to upgrade the entire electrical system.

Greater Performance:

Don’t let the small size and weight of XS Power batteries fool you. The cranking power of XS Power Batteries can be two to three times the power of a flooded battery of equal size. Take for example the XS Power Battery Part Number S925. It will often out perform and last longer than the bigger battery that comes original equipment on a new car. This makes XS Power the ideal battery for race cars, street rods, and daily drivers.

Since there are no external vents on an XS Power battery, there is no fear of mounting it in a passenger compartment, below a seat, or inside a glove box. No leaks mean no corrosion or damage to chrome or paint. We are so confident in the safety of XS Power batteries that we guarantee no acid leak even if damaged.

Have an xspower in my car and so far the best battery in terms of starting and running performance. One bounce start all the time and when the car is idling and music is playing on full blast, voltage doesn't drop below 13v even after the bass "crack".Using a standard alternator and just the xspower battery with my music

I had a yellow top which lasted 6 years plus. I blew it by keeping it on the charger for a couple of months.

It didn't show any signs of trouble tthe first week. And was using it with car music in the house. I used to charge while playing then disconnect. Then charge every so often because I didn't have time to power up the system. This degraded to that and that went on for about a year then I saw the top swollen.

Optima... Back in the day.... Had a very resiliant robust battery.

My blue top now has not given any indication of performance degradation.... Even after nearly two years of use in a frontier with a zd 30.

From the reviews so far,the "high end" or "music" batteries seem to be lasting longer than the warranty period.

If the paperwork for the battery indicates that it's a completely sealed battery and does not need to be vented, IASCA will accept that and you will not need to put the battery in an enclosure. You will still need to properly secure the battery, and be able to present the paperwork.
