Trunk Leak Help

Postby Strugglerzinc » August 14th, 2016, 5:02 pm

With the recent rain, i have discovered my trunk leaks. A lot.

Water seems to be getting below the trunk rubber seal. The water channel around the trunk is not rotted and there are no holes, yet water enters like a pipe. Flooded my carpet etc.

Additionally, pic below shows the lip starting to rust on the surface. Been leaking a while apparently.

Any suggestions on sealing the rubber? Current one has no tears, is very flexible and "clips" on very tightly to the lip and it makes good contact with the trunk lid when closed, so don't see how a new rubber will be of any help. As a last resort i may get a new one.

I plan to wire brush the rust shown and use touch up paint, however, is there any rust proof type paint i can prime with? Can red oxide be used or is there an automotive specific one i can get?

Grind off the rust or wire brush. Silicone the hole. Fastest fix I know.

There is no hole. That's just surface rust.

Actually wish there was a hole. Then I'd know how to stop it.

Hmm. Prime and clear coat? Basically you need to seal off the exposed metal.

Rust stripper or cup brush should handle that.
Have epoxy primers selling in cans now. Is just to spray.
Paint to suit after.
Can use a lil wonder on the remaining rust before priming.

Looks like condensation from water getting in. Most of these cars have a set of flaps under the bumper that allow air in amd out the trunk when you close it. Water gets in through there.
If you spare tyre wheel well has signs of rust....yea, water been getting in.

Yeah I'll handle the rust like that.

Its not condensation. Water literally flows in when rain falls. Parked in the rain and watched it through back seat.

Its like 10% of the water flowing in the channel gets into the trunk through/around the rubber somehow.

is the channel blocked ?
See if you source a new rubber and change it.
or
Is the old rubber seating correctly?
Get inside the trunk and let some one pour a bucket of water on the back glass, you will be able to pinpoint the location and inspect the rubber more closely at that piont.
or first get some one to flash a light from the outside and see if you seeing light.
I suspect your rubber is aged and not sealing in a particular location.

After wire brushing with a die grinder and brush, pieces of the channel were rusted through on the top edge, leaving gaps. Really small gaps, but gaps. Maybe this is the issue, i dunno.

Fixed those with epoxy and going to silicone the entire rubber. If it still leaks, I'll get a new one.

If that still leaks, I'll fack away with that and make some holes in the bottom of the trunk. Water enters, water drains, problem ignored.
