IF by Wednesday, the State-owned Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago (Petrotrin) fails to settle negotiations with the Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU), there will be a complete shutdown of the company.

This was the threat made by OWTU's president general Ancel Roget who warned members of the public to stock up on fuel as there will be no fuel production for the three month strike.

Roget speaking to members of the media on Friday during a press conference held at the OWTU's headquarters in San Fernando said 89 per cent of some 5000 workers will be striking.

He said: “When we serve that strike notice, everybody will take notice.”

On Thursday, Petrotrin once again held negotiating sessions with the union that lasted more than 12 hours. It began at 11 a.m. and ended at 5 a.m. on Friday. Roget said the meeting meant nothing and Petrotrin offered the company no more than zero percent increase.

He said he thought the Minister of Finance Colm Imbert would have sent a proposal which could have bene reasonable to the union through the Petrotrin officials but there was no such thing.

Complaining that the Peoples National Movement (PNM) was treating the OWTU with the same disdain as the former administration, Roget said : “ It is the politics that dealt us, this unfair blow.”

He said the company still have between Friday and Tuesday to make a reasonable proposal to the union.

He added that when the strike begins, even if negotiations were settled it will still continue as workers are also calling for the removal of Petrotrin's management who he repeatedly said was incompetent.

“At some point in time, we will be vindicated for taking this position. If we bake the pie, we deserve a fair share of the pie.” he said.

Roget added : “ When that time comes (strike) we cannot guarantee a fuel supply. When you cannot get gasoline at the fuel stations, don't blame us.”

It is unwise to store large amounts of gasoline without the appropriate precautions.

I find before they start negotiations, non-oilfield related public servants should know what wages their equivalents in Petrotrin earn first.....and then let's see who really gonna strike

Anybody panic buying yet? Strike notice means they going to give Petrotrin the heads up as to when the strike starting...so we have real time to fill up. Relax allyuh batty and don't panic.

Give them what they asking for and in 2017 when Petrotrin can't repay their bond let the creditors take control and fire all of them.

NGC workers took a salary freeze and last time I check they were still profitable so what make a loss making oil company special. It is clear the OWTU is out living their usefulness and time they understand the economic reality of the company and understand the company is on the brink on bankruptcy.

What justifies his removal, from what I gather he has had an other wise good career and solid professional life.

I'm no expert in industrial relations, but then why do they warrant a wage increase? Yes, the existent agreement between them says so. but then unions and management ent stupud, and they have to both agree things and discuss things in good faith.

I bet Petrotrin workers get paid high salaries compared to many other public bodies, and can't employees exercise self-restraint on their personal spending? What is the OWTU's rationale for a pay increase?
