Never heard of that. Snakes chase the smell of live prey, not dead, bloated carcasses. That smell is generally a signal for disease and illness among most animals except scavengers, and would shun it.

However female snakes: http://wildliferemovalusa.com/snake-attract.html
and this makes sense.

Looks like what they call a water mapepire, brown banded water snake, but I'm not sure.

Not entirely sure, it's part of the rear fanged, mildy venomous subfamily, Xenodontinae. The same as the false corals.
Edit:
Water Mapepire (Helicops angulatus)
The "water mapepire" has dorsally oriented eyes for peering above the water without having to expose much of their head or body. I snagged this individual while wading thigh-deep through a mat of floating vegetation in the Nariva Swamp. It was able to get a pretty good chewing bite in on my right ring finger, causing some mild swelling, itching, and a lot of bleeding.

This guy got bit and it didn't seem to do too much harm.

I think thats the snake btw. First time I really seeing one.
assumed its some kind of water snake because it was in the silverstream area and that entire area was underwater in recent times. A lot of it still is water

Yeah, it's surely an intimidating looking snake. Makes sense with the location too, it eats frogs and fish.
