It was a simple act of kindness which brought a big man to tears after he lost his wallet in Maloney and it was returned to him with cash and ID intact.

It was Leon Reyes, a Form One student of Five Rivers Secondary who first saw the wallet when he was on his way to the Maloney Mall to buy something for his grandmother.It’s also a story of how he was guided to do the right thing by his relatives.

“When I was walking back I saw the wallet on the ground, open and I did not take it on,“ Leon said when he was interviewed by Wee Maloney, a community project.

“I told my aunt and she went and picked up the wallet and looked through it to see who is the name and address of the owner. Then my uncle took me to the police station to make a report."

Kevin, the owner of the wallet, in the meantime, thought he lost everything.

"I really appreciate it and I am shocked. Hearing about Maloney and the crime situation, it’s not something that happens everyday."

“I only hear about this kind of thing once in a while,” he said when he was called to the Maloney Police Station to collect his wallet.

“People might talk about it but me personally experiencing that never happened. I am really shocked. I appreciate it. I got back everything,” Kevin said.

And then, amidst tears, he told Leon, “Continue doing the right thing."

“Don’t let anybody change you, keep doing the right thing,” he reiterated when he met the young man in a staged meeting at the police station."

Leon earned himself a reward.

“Whatever is in the wallet I will give you half now, I will take your number and give you the rest. I am not paying you for your kindness”, he added, “I am just encouraging you to do your best,” he told the young man.
