TTASA – Trinidad & Tobago Automotive Sporting Association has commissioned GEO Investments Ltd to install slip formed continuous reinforced concrete barriers at Wallerfield International Raceway. The first phase of the project will place the barrier system on the southern side of the straightaway to protect drivers and their cars from running off the track, particularly in the area of the gantry / walk-over bridge at the start line of the circuit track. This will be beneficial for circuit racers as well as drag racers. This section of the barrier system has been kindly sponsored by Ramatally’s Unipet, Zantech, Mileage Mack, AutoNation Ltd. , TriniTuner Ltd., HydroCarbon Training Consultants, Trini Auto Tech, Seven Star Produce, Boost Factory and RaceTrac Wheels.

A very long time in coming too late for some racers families. However, it is an upgrade that was badly needed. Beleaguered thanks to TTSA. One step in making a safe drag racing track. The next step should be pavement adjustments.

Although this is a good move...it's typical trini mentality...react when something happens as opposed to doing things to prevent things from happening

Yes it does. If you look at the video higher up you can see how the steel is fed into the machinery as it casts the cement

cool piece of machinery

only thing is the height could prob be a foot or two higher
a car which is rolling over before it hits the barrier may well roll clean over
maybe a secondary cable barrier at higher level

To me it looks like it is not high enough. As the upward grade at the base can (depending on the speed and angle of impact) cause cars to be launched over the barrier. IMHO.

So why didnt they send out a tender to supply Plastic water filled ones? thougth those were supposed to be SAFER than concrete ones? And what do they also intend to do about the Track itself?? I thought there was a dip or sink where the accidents happened?????

The concrete containment barriers at most NHRA tracks is the same height and shape as this new barrier wall. Yes in the rare case, a car will go over the wall but like I said it rarely happens.
Keep the car pointed straight, lift when you have to and don't play superman. The most will happen is you'll broadside the wall..

Btw, great job by the track officials. These barriers will make things a lot safer for everyone.

in my opinion a simple name change would remove all the blight from the place an stop the accidents. remove the old car teif name and name it after the soldier.

They are installing this on the southern side of the main straight not so? Besides the metal camera mounting arch, what else is there to hit on the southern part of the straight? Cuz patrons are not allowed there. I know gravel traps are mostly for corners but wouldn't that have been a better solution to slow the cars

Look how easy this is being done!
Hopefully somebody in the Ministry with responsibility for highways looking on.
Quite simply, this is a move in the right direction.
…...Some people just like to make everything look like rocket science with associated costs.

A 80-100ft long sand trap (not gravel) and catch net will work at the end for any runaway cars.

contractor 72 used this method by frederick settlement, caroni
unfortunately they did not grade for water runoff properly so water pools in the median area
they later tried busting some holes through the medium to little or no effect

the area near the industrial estate entrance/tye pools up pretty badly

GEO investments also does continuous slipper drains, they have a similar machine for doing it. All those nice slipper drains by Debe interchange are their handiwork. They also manufacture the razor spikes for walls. Nice job on the track , they should do the other side and then the track itself ,then they can claim international status.

Hadda get the contracts for all those dangerous spots like Piarco to Maloney on the Highway. We need continuous barriers there. That is also what should have been done Chag to Sando. No maintenance. It's not only contractor 72 supposed to be getting everything.

Geo-Inv offered a free KM in Trincity in the name of some young median crossing victims (students) with support from Coosal and some other sponsors and they laughed at them, they also highlighted Diego Martin Highway and other areas with stats and victim names etc. In fact since the machine arrived a few years ago and after several proposals including selling space to advertisers ,30-40 people have died from median crossings, faulty existing barriers etc ,mostly productive and promising citizens including that Judge and several positive young ladies/wives etc.

WRT to those big contractors they just do barriers for their highway works, after Geo's propos specifically highlighting the need for median barriers in specific trouble areas they mysteriously resurrected a machine left over by Vinci used on the overpass barriers and others purchased machines, thankfully OAS gave Geo-Inv a chance and they laid over 3km of barriers on parts of the South Highway Ext but you know how that went, but the work is there for all to see and compare.

I know for a fact Geo-Inv has approached both recent Govt's showed them they sent people away for training etc, guaranteed a metre is metre, guaranteed the best possible price and quality, guaranteed them a lot of usually idle young men from certain areas would be involved in nation building etc etc.

But you know how it goes here...thankfully some other GREAT BIG(ger) contractors like Coosal's continue to support Geo-Inv with joint ventures and future prospects etc..And of course the best concrete in this part of the world, period.
